Tethering The Storm With A Mac

I have the tethering feature on my account with Verizon. I used it with my BB Pearl with no problem. Now I cannot get it to work with my new Storm. I know verizon does not "support" the BB tethering with Mac, however it is proven to still work. I have used all the settings:

Vendor: Other
Model: Verison 1xEVDO Modem Script (I have also tried verizon support)
Username: **********@vzw3g.com (I put my phone number in here)
Password: vzw
Phone Number: #777

It is not working for me, but I have read it is working for others. I can't call verizon because they do not "support" it. I did call and make sure the tethering option was not disconnected for some reason, and they said it was still active on my account. I have downloaded VZW access manager, and still no luck. Anyone get this to work and have any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure Verizon does support tethering on the Mac. I haven't tried it with my Storm yet, but it worked fine with the Pearl.

VZW does not support Blackberry tethering on a MAC. I was using an 8830 to tether via bluetooth and just switched over to the Storm. Make sure you pair and configure your Storm and it will work fine.

rweckhoff 11-29-2008 01:13 PM

Your username is wrong. It should be **********@vzw3g.com

Tiamegs 11-29-2008 01:24 PM

Sorry, I mistyped. I do have *********@vzw3g.com.
I have read that others have been able to pair their storm. It is not working for me. For those of you who have made it work, can you give instructions? I sure would appreciate it. I have paired it via bluetooth with my computer, and that is fine. Just cannot connect. I get: :A Modem error occured. Please verify your settings and try again."

Thanks.

zechariahs 11-29-2008 08:59 PM

tiamegs, what application are you using to tether your Storm to your Mac?

In other news, I just got off the phone with VZW Tech Support and he confirmed that VZ Access Manager does not support the Storm (VZAccess Manager). He did say that I should try again when RIM releases their next update, even though the Storm may not be reflected in the list of support devices.

Tiamegs 11-29-2008 09:11 PM

I was just using a bluetooth connection setup, then I downloaded the VZ access manager for the Motorola Q, because I heard that will work with the Blackberry.

That setup is how I got it to work with the Pearl 8130, it doesn't seem to work with Storm. Let me know if find something different.

I tether my Storm with my Mac via Bluetooth without issues (without VZAccess Manager),

I paired the two. Told it to use the phones internet connection and used the following settings:

Modem: Other | Verizon Support
Username = **********@vzw3g.com
Password = vzw
Number = #777

can any one post the step by step guide i have a mac book pro with 10.5.5 leapord

Tiamegs 11-30-2008 08:48 AM

It seems like some people can get it to work, and others cannot, using the same settings on the Mac Book. I wonder if there is a setting on the phone that is different?

Tiamegs 11-30-2008 11:43 AM

Well, well, well... I updated my phone with the new "leaked" OS found elsewhere on this forum, changed NOTHING in my bluetooth connection settings, (I had it set-up already from trying earlier) and it now works. So maybe it was a software glitch on some phones???

If you are having issues, look for the leaked OS 4.7.0.75 update. It took about 45 minutes from start to finish, and then I was good to go. I am currently using the browser through my phone to make this post and the speed is GREAT! It is about as fast as our home cable internet connection.

LOVE IT!
(Also, the BB lag is better too from the update!)

By the way, you will need access to a PC for this update. There is not a OTA yet.

What OS version are you using on your Blackberry?

gautam 12-01-2008 01:44 AM

its 4.7.0.75

Tiamegs 12-01-2008 09:06 AM

Strange. Because I was having the same error message, but as soon as I installed the new OS, it worked with no problem. I would maybe try deleting the bluetooth pairing and the settings, dong a battery pull on the phone and restart on the computer and then re-setting it al up. You are using these settings right?

Modem: Other
Phone Model: Verizon Support
Username = **********@vzw3g.com
Password = vzw
Number = #777

I think they are releasing the new OS officially today, .76. Even though the download is not al that different, maybe it would help?

gautam 12-01-2008 10:25 PM

thanks tiamegs got it to work perfectly i did restart and made few battery pulls and works perfect

Tiamegs 12-01-2008 10:43 PM

Glad it is working now! There is nothing more frustrating than know you are doing everything right, and it doesn't work!

do you have tethering enabled on your verizon acct or should this just work? how much extra is tethering feature?

marxby 12-02-2008 10:15 AM

Yes, I believe tethering has to be activated on your phone account, otherwise you are continually redirected to their splash page outlining the tethering options. I'm paying $15/mo, if I remember correctly.

FYI - I had to change the phone model to "Verizon Support" for it to even work. After making that change and formatting my account as shown in previous posts, all worked fine...

Yee ha for tethering over bluetooth! :-)

jheiney 12-08-2008 12:54 PM

I just got this to work like a charm. Another forum I read stated that the username is *********@vzw3g.com, but the password is your phone number. I changed the phone model to "Other/Verizon Support" and the password to vzw and it started working fine.

Thanks for the assist, everyone.

Tethering my MAC using my Storm

I appreciate this post series as the bluetooth communication configuration setup described to use bluetooth to tether a Blackberry Storm with a MAC computer works great.

However, my experience is that my MAC keeps losing the connection in a very short time after connecting.

When this happens my MAC displays an error message:
Internet Connect -- The connection wa terminated by the remote site. Please try again.

Anyone else seeing this problem? Can something be done to tweak something on either the blackberry Storm or the MAC to eliminate this so that my MAC stays connected to the internet via my blackberry Storm?

This disconnect happens using bluetooth or connecting via USB using the USB cable included with the Blackberry Storm.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

I had problems when my airport was turned on at the same time as a bluetooth connection. Make sure that is turned off. Otherwise it tries to search and connect other networks.

falleyne 12-08-2008 07:44 PM

I just did this with my MacBook Pro works great. I am only getting 600kb/sec download and 200kb upload. I hate that VZ only shows 1xEV for both reg and 3G.

I did it on speedtest.net

lakeshel 12-11-2008 06:45 PM

Help?

I'm trying to do what everyone is say works but still having issues. Currently, its asking for a password than once you try to enter in a password it gives an error message of could not open communication device. What am I doing wrong?

terencejlewis 12-31-2008 07:25 PM

Works Great for Me!

lakeshel - Did you get the Bluetooth working?

djrobsd 01-10-2009 02:04 AM

Sorry folks you are all SOL

Verizon is very smart.

The instructions in this post work great, but as soon as you go to any web site, it will be like trying to get internet at Starbucks, it will redirect you to a page saying that you need to call an 800# to add it to your plan and it tells you the prices, $15 w/ Blackberry Enterprise, $30 for regular users, or $59.99 without your phone (using an aircard). 5GB per month, .25 a meg over.

No free ride here... LOL guess I will go back to my jailbroken iphone with PDANet. ;)

Tethering on verizon is not a free service. If you look over earlier posts, you will notice that people are paying the tethering fee. Tethering with your BB is a cheaper option than a another service contract with an aircard.
