CDMA OS 4.5.0.33, 8830 Release 48

Anyone try it out yet? You can find it today on the internet if you do a basic search.

John Clark 06-25-2008 12:18 PM

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

That's an earlier beta. Even newer ones are still buggy.

akosnitzky 06-25-2008 12:26 PM

So I take it that I should wait a bit longer?

penguin3107 06-25-2008 12:26 PM

I would.

WorldIRC 06-25-2008 12:27 PM

All the betas out are still buggy.....

John Clark 06-25-2008 12:28 PM

I have no info on that version. I heard that .43 was still somewhat buggy.

I wouldn't go that far. I've heard .48 for GSM devices is pretty well bug free and is a good release candidate across most carriers.

akosnitzky 06-25-2008 12:36 PM

But this is .33, Release 48 : -)

I have read from others in other Betas, the issue of voice quality.

My hope is that we will see improved betas once the initial one is out in the open.

penguin3107 06-25-2008 12:37 PM

John is talking about .48 as the app version. (4.5.0.48)

John Clark 06-25-2008 12:40 PM

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

Correct. There is an app ver .43 out there. Don't remember the build number.

Just don't "put it out in the open" here.

Understood.
Thank you

Dawg 06-25-2008 03:27 PM

.33 on my curve has been pretty bug free.

juwaack68 06-25-2008 03:35 PM

I have heard that .33 on 8830 has issues like no longer being able to use cap or alt-scroll to select multiple messages, as well as ALT-ENTER no longer locking the keyboard.

I think there were others, but can't remember what they were off the top of my head.

I can confirm that both of those issues exist on the 8830 and the 8330.
Both devices were on BES, so not sure if that's a factor.

juwaack68 06-25-2008 03:52 PM

You're using .33, Dawg?

Dawg 06-25-2008 03:54 PM

yes 4.5.0.33 platform 3.2.0.30

canson 06-25-2008 04:26 PM

os 4.5!

Most comments on berryreview are good! I am installing it as we speak :)

wunderbar 06-25-2008 04:40 PM

well, I might try this beta out on my 8830 tomorrow. I'm really curious to try out 4.5. hopefully it doesn't prove to be too buggy.

zerog46 06-25-2008 04:57 PM

The only Down side of the O.S. for me is the media player not working right... It plays some video's and not other's no rhyme or reason, all are the same format...

If you do install it, please let us know what, if any, bugs you find. The users I talked to were using Sprint, but Dawg is using Verizon (no issues there).

I'm curious to know if other CDMA carrier devices will have same/similar issues or not.

Bozo2007 06-25-2008 06:14 PM

I loaded 8830 4.5 onto my BB but i cant find voice notes. Is this a seperate download?

John Clark 06-25-2008 06:15 PM

It's included.

Bozo2007 06-25-2008 06:42 PM

Well I must be blind but I cant find it on my home screen. Do I need to download DM 4.5 as well?

akosnitzky 06-25-2008 06:58 PM

Does the file host grp allow you to download the file more than once?
I deleted the file but am now getting the courage.

zerog46 06-25-2008 07:32 PM

It should but you might have to wait a day...

I think it is one download per hour

zerog46 06-25-2008 07:38 PM

Yup my bad 1 per hour...

Its in the media section. Its not a seperate icon.

John Clark 06-25-2008 07:55 PM

On the GSM devices there is a separate icon on the homescreen.

I see the icon in the media section. But there are no contols to play or record. Any ideas?

John Clark 06-25-2008 09:19 PM

Maybe it's not installed. Unless you removed the .cod for Voicenotes I don't know why it wouldn't install. Could be not included in that beta version. That's an early cdma beta version.

ma077146 06-25-2008 09:34 PM

I tried it for a few hours, and then downgraded to my old OS.

I didn't see any html viewing ability in email, not much difference in the browser, and there was no provision to choose "Desktop" mode in the BB browser. Likely, that will all change when carriers release their production versions.

juwaack68 06-25-2008 09:36 PM

RIM is upgrading BIS this weekend that will allow HTML (as long as you have OS 4.5).

John Clark 06-25-2008 09:36 PM

HTML email will be enabled this weekend on most North American Carriers.

If you go to your blackberry messenger and app click you can choose to send a voicenote. These will be saved where u have no controls. Not sure how else to make it work. BTW I tried to send a voicenote to a non OS 4.5 user with no luck.

akosnitzky 06-25-2008 11:16 PM

Wow.
I did the download. I have no connectivity. It says I have no browser configuration.

In the app loader, 4.5 Core applications was gray. so was the Browser

I am using 4.2 DM.

John Clark 06-25-2008 11:34 PM

Did you resend service books?

Ashg 06-25-2008 11:38 PM

I could do without all the extra bells and whistles for a while if i could find a way to get the Alpha Sans font on my phone. Sharp!

akosnitzky 06-25-2008 11:43 PM

I did. All I am getting 1x on the network.

It reads I am NOT connected to BIS.

akosnitzky 06-25-2008 11:49 PM

Host Routing Table was empty

Alt enter locks my KB on my Alltel 8330 4.5 OS

I tried to alt-scrol to select messages and it doesnt work but I don't know if I am doing that right because I never did that before.

Im using rel44

SkyPilot 06-26-2008 09:25 AM

At first glance here is what I have found on my Bell 8830 using this OS
Alt enter does not work
alt-scroll for selecting multiple messages does not work
Skypilot

jamespaulritter 06-26-2008 09:39 AM

ops Im on 8330

purephase 06-26-2008 09:40 AM

Strange.

Alt-Enter works for me, but selecting multiple messages doesn't. Outside of that, I don't notice any issues. Obviously, going from 4.3 to 4.5 is not that noticeable. Going to try out docs-to-go today.

akosnitzky 06-26-2008 10:37 AM

I downgraded back. No data, no deal. I am glad many of you have been successful.

breakerfall 06-26-2008 11:26 AM

something weird with text entry fields in the browser. if there's an entry field on a site that i go to, i can only enter text if i do so on the first pass (with the cursor) of the field.

for instance, if there is a text entry field near the top of a page, and i want to see what else is on the page before entering text by scrolling down past the first page-full, i cannot return to the text field and successfully enter text.

weird.

wunderbar 06-26-2008 11:46 AM

I have downloaded and installed this release on my Telus 8830. I can say that the keyboard shortcuts mentioned before are not working. Also, my trackball no longer makes the audible click, even though in the settings it is set to.

I will do some more testing on it to see what else has changed. I do like the new look for messages, easier on the eyes.

wunderbar 06-26-2008 12:12 PM

The google Gmail app crashes every time I try to run it. it'll load just fine, but as soon as I try to go back to the home screen, it crashes.

google maps loads, but no map info actually shows.

I *love* the new browser. I got to play with it at WES on the Blackberry Bold, but that was for about 5 minutes. now that i've sat down and used it, I love it. a much needed improvement.

It also seems to be showing every single calendar entry on my device twice, at the same time. for instance, I have a meeting at 2:30 today, it shows up on my outlook calendar once, but it shows it there twice on my Berry. Wireless activation also seems to be stuck at 99%. I may try wiping the device and re-activating

FF2 06-26-2008 12:21 PM

How does one DOWNgrade if one wants to go back?

Well, the subject says it all. I've only recently upgraded to the newest official Verizon OS for my 8830 (4.2...... whatever) but I have never had to consider downgrading.

How does one downgrade using Desktop Manager?

Thanks in advance

The same for me. I installed 4.5 just because the Alpha Sans font. It just makes my BlackBerry more readable than with the old fonts. I'm willing to live with a beta software and all its glitches just because I can use this font.

I've downloaded themes that have their font based on Alpha Sans, but you can't use the font on all places, that's why I installed the beta. And I'm happy now, even if I can't multi select email to erase.

Hmmm. No out of network SMS messages for me (VZW 8830). Downgraded to OS 4.2 until a less buggy beta surfaces..

Strange I could only send out of network. Just downgraded... Didnt remember how snappy 4.2 was. Giving 4.5 another shot as we speak though. Loved the way the messages looked and the browser... well if youtube woulda worked....

Dawg 06-27-2008 07:01 AM

sounds like 4.5 doesnt like the 8830 too much. I havent had any issues with SMS. I do have the text issue on webpages. and the alt scroll bug other than that i am enjoying 4.5 I cant wait till tomorrow at this time to check out HTML

breakerfall 06-27-2008 07:11 AM

I havent had any sms issues myself, but the text entry on webpages may be a dealbreaker for me (especially since i just started really liking m.slandr.net for twitter)...

im thinking that if verizon drags their feet on the bis update (dunno if thats even their option) i may drop back to 4.2

Dawg 06-27-2008 07:24 AM

as long as you enter the text on the first pass your fine

wunderbar 06-27-2008 09:37 AM

I think I'm going to stick with thsi 4.5 release on my 8830 for now. IT has some bugs, but none are really deal breakers. I just hope that the next release fixes the bugs.

I dont' use SMS as this is a work phone, so I can't confirm the SMS problems. I just really wish that the alt-scroll worked, or that pressing the trackball to light up the screen didnt' launch the application currently highlighted.

akosnitzky 06-27-2008 11:16 AM

Okay.......

I am getting ready for the next beta. From what I understand there are other betas that exist. Maybe another one will be made accessible to us.

stressles 06-28-2008 07:25 PM

I also tried 4.5.0.33 on VZW with my 8830 and had all the same issues as stated above and also SMS didnt work for me. I am going to downgrade back to 4.2.2.196 until the SMS is fixed. The other bugs, I was able to deal with but no SMS was something I cant live without at the moment.

customshopkv1 06-28-2008 08:12 PM

How come the contact list is 1.5 spaced?

John Clark 06-28-2008 08:18 PM

That just how they decided to do that. The extra space will show "Company" if you have it filled in.

customshopkv1 06-28-2008 08:42 PM

I liked it better the other way, but oh well.

John Clark 06-28-2008 08:47 PM

I did too but I'm used to it now....You'll get used to it.

ofelas 06-29-2008 06:03 PM

4.5.033 on my VZW 8830.

No SMS issues.
However - cannot multiple select messages.
Also - started with 18MB free memory (no apps ecxept Docs2Go) which reduced to 14MB within a few hours.

ChrisLe 06-29-2008 07:44 PM

I was, I just uninstalled it. Other than that everything on my 8330 is working fine, but I just upgraded this morning so we'll see.

John Clark 06-29-2008 08:13 PM

There are known issues with SoftReset and OS 4.5. It'll need an update in order to work.

mike2160 06-29-2008 10:12 PM

reset button on 8830

;-)downloaded 4.5 on 8830. first few times I got the error message with the reset button. pulled battery a couple times now it works every time with 4.5.

glenng 06-30-2008 12:26 AM

i put it on last week. works good. got the DTG office suite, and the html email came through today. aside from the previously mentioned bugs, i found another: I cant increase the speed of the pearl ball. increasing the speed does nothing. i set speed at 50 for up and down and left and right, and it is still mad slow. i hope they fix in next release....thanks guys

BFEINZIMER 06-30-2008 04:29 AM

You need to install Documents To Go on your device if you're using OS 4.5
Run application loader again, and install DocsToGo.

24 hours with OS 4.5 & BIS 2.5 on VZW 8830

I have only been playing with it for 24 hours or so, but here is what I have found with my VZW 8830 device:

- A bit sluggish, but not painfully so. Noticeable, but again, I could deal.
- Ringer Volume still sucks
- When wakening it from "sleep" using the track ball, it wakes into the application the curser was previously covering, instead of just taking you to the desk top.
- Track ball light is dimmer (I think.. meaning, I can not say for sure, but I never noticed it this dim).
- SMS works fine for me, in and out of network.
- I am a Mac user, and Missing Sync no longer recognizes the device.
- Weirdest 1 of all: None of the Ringer Apps work in any of the profiles. Example: Ringer_BBpro_1, _2, _3 _4 does not work with this OS (for me anyway). Notifier_BBpro_6 does not work as well. However, Notifier_BBpro_5 works fine..... To clearify, the rest of the Alarm_, Notifier_, Ringer_ and Tune_ sounds work properly. Can't figure this one out!
- Empower shows in my application list, but does not show in the message options. This is not an issue as I prefer the new BIS rendering.

Applications that I have loaded and seem to work fine:

- Beyond 411
- MS Live Search
- BB Weather
- GMaps
- WorldMate Live
- Viigo Beta
- Google Sync
- Google Search
- CryptMagic

Hope this helps.... I love the HTML Email, cleaner calendar, cleaner contacts and browser! Best of luck.....

BTW, the OS is 4.5.0.33 (Platform 3.2.0.30)

mkjellman 07-01-2008 10:35 PM

I wanted to let you all know that I too took the plunge and installed 4.5.0.33 on my 8330. I've searched for an hour and its impossible to find the current .45 beta build, but wait!

-None of the ringers work. they are marked as extension aac and if you try to play them in the media application it says they are unsupported media types. Guess a framework didn't make it into this beta.

-SLOW. Answering a call takes 1-2 seconds to answer the call.

-3rd party apps that I had worked as expected including VZNav

-Blackberry freezes every time i connect it to BlackBerry Desktop Manager. USB Disk mode works just fine.

-HTML email works with BES hacked on SP5

-Browser buggy, no improvements over 4.3, had to disable the mouse mode to make it usable at all. The new built in search is nice...

-I stream Sirius through Orb. Once I get it streaming I like to do other things on my phone. On 4.5, switching out of browser ends the streaming and I loose my Sat Radio...last straw! Back to 4.3 (and I've beta tested everything I own)

Odd. My 8830 is still syncing perfectly with Missing Sync on my MBP. The only issue I'm having with PC connectivity is that USB Mass Storage Mode isn't being recognized on my Mac, though the MicroSD card seems to mount just fine when connected to XP (though it did install a new driver, oddly enough).

It is just crazy to see all the different issues we are having with the same OS (beta of course) and the same device. I can not get Missing Sync to recognize my device to save my life. Luckily, I use XP via VMWare as well so I am still able to use DM (which works perfectly, BTW).

And, all the problems mkjellman is having, I am not having at all! Although I do agree that it is slow when answering calls. But, I love the mouse feature and it works perfectly..... all very weird!

Supposedly 4.5.0.45 release 65 addresses most (or all) of these problems. Just difficult to find at the moment, but apparently it's around (don't ask me, I can't find it either).

I hope so, I am ready to downgrade.. the hitting the trackball and it selecting what was already highlighted when waking it up is a pain in the arse. Not to mention when I get 100+ emails I have to delete them one by one :(#$^@#

delikid 07-03-2008 08:26 AM

I saw over on crackberry.com that someone posted a screen of their sprint curve with a button "download upgrade" for the upgrade to 4.5. Do you think sprint will push the upgrade?

purephase 07-03-2008 11:07 AM

RIM is working on that type of functionality but I'm not sure if it is that close to being ready for prime-time (at least, in time for 4.5). Would be interesting though.

Sith_Apprentice 07-03-2008 11:10 AM

OTA Software Upgrade will be coming. It is a feature supported by BES 4.1.5, and will eventually be offered by the carriers as well. OS 4.5 does support it but it must be enabled by RIM at the NOC level first.

Kazmi 07-05-2008 10:40 AM

I had to downgrade too - my phone stopped connecting after dialing out (so reminiscent of windows mobile !) and I was unable to hear the other person even though I was connected. I don't know if this was the beta acting up or a memory issue but nothing seemed to resolve it except a battery pull EVERYTIME I had to make a call :?

back to 4.2 and that issue is gone. I too am eager to get the snappier, better looking OS back....any idea when big red plans on releasing the 4.5os to us lesser beings?

I've been quite happy with 4.5.0.33 so far . . . . No issues with SMS, and once I messed around a bit with different themes (A few seem quite unstable) it's runing great.

Having said that, I'd love to take the latest for a spin as soon as I can locate it ;-)

4.5.0.33 on vzw 8830

I have been using this os for about a week and will use till a new one shows up. What I have notice a couple of times is the phone just turns off. On bt I can not hear the call when I answer.
But I really like the 8gb media player with the new functions, it play real smooth too. No skips and loads alot better than flipside did. Much much better and less memory used too.
I have e-mail alerts for a cabin that I rent and the sound will not work. But I get the bb regular alert even though it is not as loud. The indicator light still will blink red and green. I called e-mobile, but from what i read here its the beta. Love the new browser and it seems pretty perky for my limited service location. The new version 2.5 of berry tunes works good and allows bt too now for 8830. Will be looking for next upgrade. Thanks for all the good comment and info. PS Is that really John Clarks face. I get a kick out of watching that goof.

It's seems pretty obvious that our buddies over in Waterloo have batten down the hatches when it comes to leaks! Their legal dept is workin' overtime. ;-)

Oh well, I still haven't tried any of the betas. I just can't get too excited about HTML email. Hell, I was using mutt until only recently!

Sose, 4.5.0.45 for the 8830 is on popular blogs? I have only seen it for the 8330. Hint??

akosnitzky 07-06-2008 06:56 PM

Yes. I have not seen anything other than the .33 for us 8830 users.

4.5.0.51 is amazingly stable. Fixes almost all problems with .33 I have only found 2 problems with this new build. May only be 1 or 2 more releases before a final version is released.
