Latest OS: 9700 5.0.0.1655/5.0.0.1014 (East Asia + English)

Software For BlackBerry® Bold (TM) 9700 smartphone
This will install to any carrier's 9700 by following the instructions below.

BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.1655 (East Asia + English)

Package Version: 5.0.0.1655
Consisting of:

* Applications: 5.0.0.1014
* Software Platform: 5.1.0.177
* File name: 9700jEastAsia_PBr5.0.0_rel1655_PL5.1.0.177_A5.0.0. 1014.ex e

Download the OS here: http://smartphone.nttdocomo.co.jp/ma...5.0.0.1014.exe

Instructions for installing on ANY carrier's 9700:

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." Vista/Win7 users: In the apploader folder, simply click on "Compatibility files" to see the actual Vendor.xml file. Once you've got that - simply delete the vendor.xml file there (even if you've deleted or think you've deleted it in the folder previously) and voila, it will allow you to update to the newly installed OS!
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a black "BlackBerry" screen with a status bar for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again, and it should load the OS to the device.

For the previous OS, see this link: http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ilanguage.html

Willing to try it. I'm running .979 and there are a few bugs I've noticed. Also, my memory is all over the place. Sometimes it's at 113, sometimes it's 94. Luck of the draw.

Thanks for the link. Currently very happy with the beta OS6.
I know that RIM don't post changelogs, but has anybody noticed any new 'stuff' with this released OS?

After a few days, I'm loving this release. Rock solid, fast, and better battery life. I don't regret "downgrading" from the buggy and oversized (for the 9700 anyway) OS 6 releases one bit.

You must delete or uninstall the higher OS from the PC first, at Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > find the OS6 and remove it.

Then, follow the directions above.

I think you'll find that phone hardware problems are a very low percentage that users have in this forum. And I'm quite confident it's no more than than other manufacturers. Most of the problems here are software related, and that's always going to vary depending on the users experience, what is on the phone, etc. If you've never had a problem related to anything that's been talked about on this forum, I would say that's very rare.

Only the memory is upgraded to 512 MB and the camera is upgraded to 5 megapixels versus the 9700;s 3.2 camera. The process was NOT upgraded on the 9780 or the Torch 9800, they all use the same 624 MHz., sounds slow, but gets the job done pretty well.

Is anyone else getting lousy wifi performance on this version?

It seems generally slow and unresponsive for me. Also, UMA call quality has been poor since the upgrade. Could UMA be due to this not being a tmo os?

I think i may hop on the latest os6 beta soon but i was just curious.

When I first bought my BB 9700 2 months ago it had Japanese language input. However, when I upgraded, that ability was lost.

I was able to upgrade to 5.0.0.1014 (bundle 1655, Platform 5.1.0.177) but still can't input Japanese text. I tried to upgrade to 6.0 but so far have not been able to do it.

I am running Windows XP, have tried several times... What do I gotta do? Downgrade? Someone help please, I'm in information overload by perusing the site lol.

I am in Japan on Docomo

Were you having any problems with anything in the last OS before you upgraded? If not then you were probably better off staying where you were. If this really bothers you can downgrade back to your previous version.

I was getting the "Error starting <Application>: Error loading module '<App Module>' VerifyError" error message with increasing frequency when downloading new apps or upgrading old ones. The only way to fix that seemed to wipe and reload the OS, and so I thought "why not upgrade the OS?"

The lag is not a big deal to me, just an observation on this OS version's behavior. I think I remember reading other people having the same problem with other recent OS updates.

Ok. Then upgrading was a smart thing to do. Not sure about the lag issue, but maybe someone else will jump in.

New Member. Need Help Choosing between .979 and .1014

Hi.

I am a newbie to BB comparitively and new to this forum as well. Thanks in advance for all the help and support and efforts.

Bold 9700 - Currently on the DOCOMO Firmware 5.0.0.1014. Have a few questions though. Please Help

1) Why is this OS considered official if its present on a Carrier's website but not on the official BlackBerry website where they have all continents' carriers listed?

2) I had used .979 also and upgraded to .1014. But I have experienced issues with it - data leak and it is running my bill high and hence bothering me.

3) I learned from the official website that when the letter "J" is present at the beginning of the firmware name (e.g. 9700jEastAsia.. etc) it takes up an additional of approx. 5 MB space irrespective of whether you choose Japanese input or not. So is there a non "J" version of 5.0.0.1014?

4) Lastly can anyone advise me between .979 and .1014? I did not have any noticeable issues on .979. But since I moved to .1014 I've had data leaks. I only use my 9700 for e-mail and only add-on / third party apps are one THEME From app world and Google Talk & Yahoo Messenger. That's it. So for my use, does .1014 have a significant benefit, else I might just go back to .979

also.. since officially OS 6 has been released for Bold 9700; does that mean they will or have stopped releasing updates for OS 5? Will there be no official release for OS 5 after this DOCOMO 5.0.0.1014?

Thank you
God Bless
BB Lover Girl

Have you checked your phone settings to make sure their set correctly? You can get to them through the sound profile at the bottom under "Set Ring Tones/Alerts.

The latest version has been out for going on a couple months now (wonder if there will be any future versions of OS5??). Keep in mind you don't hear from all the users who don't have a problem, and the ones you do hear from you don't know what they have on their phone that might be causing an issue. It's never a black and white issue as to what's the best OS version as it can definitely vary for each user and their particular setup.

Well I changed from os 6.0.0.461 to this one because even though it gave me excellent battery life (1 1/2 to 2 days) at first soon it started giving me very very less I had to start charging even 7-8 hrs.the other thing i noticed was the camera after 4-5 pictures it would go mad like turn into large pink pixels.I have been running the os 6 for a month now and I must say it slowly eats the mobile phone.I am glad I am back to os 5 nothing like it.

I am considering going back to OS5 too. I have been having problems with OS6 on my 9700, sometimes getting locked and wont turn on, and also problem with battery, the battery meter would show %10-%15, and then suddenly phone would shut down. I cannot afford this when I am traveling and when my phone would be my only means of communication in a foreign country.

I am going back down to OS5.

I have tried to withstand the flaws on beta 6 on my Bold waiting for a formal release, but today I'm going back to v5

My main reason hasn't to do with battery life, but with the gosh editing cursor, and the shift (select) workaround. I just can't continue to sacrifice productivity against this glitch.

So welcome back to the good-old-painless days !

Okay, very confused now.... even though I downloaded 5.0.0.1655 & ran apploader from within the right folder, it installed 6.0! (n)

Guess I need to delete that and redo the whole process. :?
