When will BlackBerry release a device using the 3G technology? What service providers? Is it worth the wait?

The 8100 is 3G-ready now, but T-Mobile is not. They should be rolling out their 3G network in early 2007, with some testing in limited markets (big cities) starting right about now. I believe Seattle is first up, and hopefully New York is not too far behind.

What about Cingular? Cingular should be rolling out the 8100 as early as November or by end of 1st quarter 2007. If the phone is initially on EDGE, can it be switched to 3G when 3G is up and running?

How will you know when you are on a 3g network? Will it say something other than EDGE??

i thought 8707 contains 3G band. Or did you mean when will BB release a device using 3G in US?

hmm.. i checked the US 8100 and it is not 3G ready yet thou. Is the EU 8100 going to be 3G ready?

That's what I want to know. If the Cingular 8100 is 3G capable, but the 3G network is not available, will the phone switch to 3G from EDGE when the 3G network is available?

The 8707 uses UMTS, but not the UMTS that Cingular is rolling out in the US. The 8707 uses UMTS 2100 which is not the same.

Where did ANYONE get the notion that the 8100 is "3G ready". Wishful thinking, perhaps.

in the back of my head I did think to myself that no Blackberry is FULL 3G capable as of yet...

Ah - well, the answer to your question (as found in the 8707 documentation) is that it will show "3G" and "3G" + a bb symbol when it is on 3G.

I was responding to others who said the 8100 was 3G compatible. I'd like a source on that.

I was on some carriers web site - Maxis Mobile of Malaysia (I am going there in 3 weeks) and I found it there. Showed the 3G symbols and all. On the 8707. I don't have the PDF file.

I guess the real question is, would I be able to use an UNLOCKED 8707v on cingular...also, is the 8707v GPS capable, would I loose any functionality with the 8707 vs the 8700c?

There are several earlier threads on this. The 8707v uses UMTS 2100 which is NOT what Cingular is rolling out. A different frequency.

Isn't that just like everything else we do in the U.S. Everyone else uses Metric, we use Standard (ironically named). Europe uses GSM 800,900,1800MHz, we use 850,1900MHz. They use UMTS 2100, Cingular is rolling out a different frequency. Why do we always have to be different? Imagine all the cool devices open to us if we used the same frequency as they do.

the 8100 isnt 3G ready, im on t-Mobile UK and if it was surely i would be able to use it ... the gprs is pretty fast though over ere as its an old technology in fact 3G (umts) is old technology with the release of HSDPA (3.5G) which is up to 1.8mbps at present increasing to 10mbps by 2010

Bottom line is the 8707 is optimised for UMTS networks, all other (new) devices are optimised for EDGE.

Depends when the defense networks switch all their military stuff off of 3G. Japan has had 3G for years now because their military never really used it.

Verizon and Sprint have their 3G solutions already, and theyve been out for over a year now. EVDO is what the moniker is used, and it's CDMA. 7250's were capable of it, but the new8703e and 7130's are EVDO capable.
