3.8 on a NON-Charm BB

OK... I'm trying to work this out, but can't seem to get apploader to recognize the software. When I add it (already deleted previous 3.7 and 4.0 OS' from loader files), it doesn't report any errors, just doesn't show up on the apploader screen (checkboxes and all that.)

The device is completely wiped except for minimum OS4 core files.

Interestingly enough, I see this in Platform.alx

Gonna keep plugging away at it... I'm welcome to entertain ideas or clues as to how to get it on...

bfrye 10-08-2004 09:50 AM

Nevermind... under the GPRS subdirectory, only file in there is rim7100g.bin

I need rim6230g.bin

Any clues?

bfrye 10-08-2004 09:53 AM

Guess I need to research things before I post... found the file :P

Oh well, a play-by-play report never hurts anything...

bfrye 10-08-2004 09:57 AM

Well, copying the rim6230g.bin file from the 3.7 software package doesn't work...

bfrye 10-08-2004 09:58 AM

I wonder if it will even run on a non-color BB...

acnst 10-08-2004 10:08 AM

I have a BB 7230 running the cod-files from the 7100-package and the GPRS-file from a 3.7.1.x version. I did the following steps to get version 3.8 running on the 7230:
-Downloaded and installed FW-Package for 7100 and 72xx.
-Deleted everything from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\7200-v3.7.1.37_P1.6.1.36\ beside the directory GPRS which contains rim7200g.bin.
-I copied everything from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\7100-v3.8.0.115_P1.8.0.83 to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\7200-v3.7.1.37_P1.6.1.36
-From C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader I deleted vendor.xml
-Then started apploader.exe and upgrade the device to 3.8
-Et voilá my 7230 is running 3.8

bfrye 10-08-2004 10:10 AM

oh sweet... I was about to head that direction... started off just copying the .bin file, but it wasn't working

Is there any advantage to upgrading a 72xx/77xx BlackBerry to OS 3.8?

bfrye 10-08-2004 10:12 AM

3.8 supposedly has support to use it as a wireless modem for your laptop

bfrye 10-08-2004 10:17 AM

Worked great ;)

bfrye 10-08-2004 10:44 AM

FYI... the above method posted by acnst will not work if you copy the files over the 4.0 system files.

JesseRPI 10-08-2004 10:50 AM

So does your computer now recognize your BlackBerry as a modem?

bfrye 10-08-2004 10:55 AM

heh... no, it's probably not THAT easy :P

Mark Rejhon 10-08-2004 11:56 AM

Wow. You're brave. You can easily lobotomize a BlackBerry doing this.

This is not for the faint of heart!

Congratulations!

Well I've had to wipe it 2x already because I screwed up copying the files over. JVM errors and no boot. But desktop manager has always been able to easily re-install whichever software version I want to put on it...

bfrye 10-08-2004 12:27 PM

Well something happened and getting JVM error 523 now... everytime it boots...

acnst 10-08-2004 12:49 PM

What do JVM error codes mean?

bfrye 10-08-2004 12:57 PM

I have that bookmarked already too... ;)

Gonna try to install it bit by bit until it works...

dshearon 10-10-2004 07:39 PM

is there any advantage other than using it as a modem?

is the new IM software in the package. any other apps?

dshearon 10-10-2004 07:45 PM

where did you download the system software for the 7100 by the way?
