Format intervention on Blackberry Q10

Aft all

I have a problem whist trying to compose emails, which occured once previously, but was resolved when an automatic system update arrived, but has now reoccurred.
Basically when i enter Gmail to compose my email the format option occurs automatically and a grey screen covers the email. There is an up arrow and a down arrow which allows the screen to be moved aside, but whilst it is in place, any effort at typing just draws on the prospective mail or enters hieroglyphics.
Additionally when the grey screen is aside, some typing is possible but some of the options do not work properly eg full stop, and double spacing occurs etc
The format pen knib symbol remains in place at the foot of the screen.
It appears that the situation came about after I accidentally double clicked the down arrow to start a new paragraph.
I would like to know how this can be resolved back to normal operation if anyone can help please?
I have been unable to find any reference to a format problem anywhere on the net, or how to resolve it.

I'm trying to figure out what you are seeing and how you made it happen. Are you using the BlackBerry Hub?

Hi Ira
yes using the Hub, and Gmail within it.
Previous to the problem occurring producing an email followed the normal course of events. However the format pen nib symbol is now part of the lower task bar, and I am unable to remove the option, thus suffering the symptom's I outlined above.
My view is that I need to remove format back to it's prior passive state, as I don't normally require the options it provides.
It's how to remove it and the undesired interventions from it which is proving a problem

Okay. I guessed that was the case, but needed to be sure.

I composed an email and tapped the format icon at the bottom of the screen. That opened the formatting bar at the top of the email body. But I don't get the gray overlay that you describe, and I don't see a way to reproduce what you see.

An idea... When you have the situation you describe, can you tap the more icon at the bottom right and convert to plain text instead of HTML, and does that get you out of the gray overlay?

Another thought, does this happen when you reply, when you forward, when you compose from scratch? Is there any pattern?

Hi Ira and all
Ira thank you for your efforts to try and help me resolve the problem. Unfortunatley switching from Plain text to HTML, or the reverse, did not resolve things.

I concluded that more drastic action was required and so considered reverting to factory settings/security wipe.
However I was nervous about the repercussions to my device, and the extent I would need to go to, in order to restore it to pre problem status.
I bit the bullet and pressed the relevant button and the device reverted to as new status.

After the event I needed to reload my contacts and my apps, but my email address had been preserved, as had my subscriptions to various news groups and within 30 mins I was again receiving my newsgroup messages. it has also resolved the formatting problem, at least for the time being.

I hope this info may help someone else.

Interesting. It would seen corrupt data or settings was the issue, but darned if I can make any more sense of it than that.

Thanks for the update.
