When I open my maps my blackberry doesn't know where I am - should it?

GPRS is 2G, I believe you mean GPS.
No, the 8520 does NOT have GPS.

If your phone doesn't have GPS, check out Google Maps. It will at least triangulate with the nearby cell towers and provide you with an approximate location.

True, 8520 has no GPS but bb maps does show your location. It uses cell towers to triangulate your position. Go to options then to maps and see if "show location" is off.
