Typing while driving?

Hey,

I wanted to take a poll and see how many people type and drive. Man I have gotten in a real bad habit of doing this and I know that I am going to end up dead as a result.

Yea, and I am the guy that gripes at everyone else for reading, eating and fixing the hair while driving.

Forget talking on the phone as being dangerous, this is a killer.

So let's hear it... who else is guilty? I can't be the only one.

BBAdmin 08-22-2005 11:28 AM

I'm trying to be good. Not sure where you are but in the UK you'll get an on the spot fine (if the police can be bothered) for driving on the phone or not having your phone fixed securely in your car. I've just got 5 points on my licence for speeding so I'm having to behave which means no emails and bluetooth headsets all round in my car!!!!!

TheWastedYears 08-22-2005 11:29 AM

I have a bluetooth headset for talking, so I'm safe in that dept.

I'll respond to extremely important emails while at redlights, but I won't do it while driving. Having a 5spd also encourages me not to do it.

My boss, on the other hand... has never used his turn signal, b/c one hand is always holding the Blackberry.

Girion 08-22-2005 11:31 AM

Yeah...I've done it. I'm not proud, and in SoCal we have probably the most people per capita who talk on phones and drive. But I do it only in the most URGENT of situations, and I do mean urgent. The jabra BT headset has been a godsend, without having to even look at the BB now, I can take and make calls, which helps me be a bit safer on the roadways.

Going down the Interstate doing 70mph (straight stretch and not much traffic) using BB Messenger!! :-) That is the best!!

neosoulkarma 08-22-2005 11:41 AM

I swear I only do it at stop signs or red lights!!!! It's the only time...I swear!!!!

dkmadrid 08-22-2005 11:46 AM

I think I may have done it once in all the time I've owned and used a BB, and I can't remember the specific reason (but I bet it wasn't that critical). I enjoy life too much for that nonsense. In reality, no email/SMS/PIN is that important! Put down the crack-pipe people!!!

Prophet 08-22-2005 11:48 AM

I plead the 5th...damn mapquest and SMS...

Dawg 08-22-2005 11:50 AM

I have a fixed holster in my car so i can type one handed pretty easliy. I have bluetooth for phone calls.

ladydi 08-22-2005 11:56 AM

guilty as charged. In my Jeep, I can steer with my elbows so I have both thumbs for typing. Luckily I only drive a couple days a week and I never BB in heavy traffic.

a_kayaker 08-22-2005 12:19 PM

Elbows! HA what a great idea. I have been using my teeth. Actually I use the method of hold the bb in front of your eyes and type with one hand while the other is on the wheel.

If you squint and tilt you head just right everything comes into view nicely.

I have to say that I am supprised at the posts so far. I really expected a larger majority of people doing this. I guess i'm glad your not. If they ever pass a law here in KY I am screwed!

KonTiki 08-22-2005 12:28 PM

I did it once and my wife threaten to divorce me the next time i took it out of the holster while in the car (never mind at a red light or traffic jam, she covered those too) so i am not going to test it. She does not even like the fact that I bought the darned thing. She wants to send me to Blackberry Anonymous to start the 12 step process.

jscully 08-22-2005 12:28 PM

I do all of the time, and that's one of the reason's I bought a Blackberry. I had scared the tar out of my brother, driving over a steep hill, steering with my knee, talking on my cell, while pulling up an address on my palm with a stylus....
I only type with one thumb though while driving, and I only look down after every 3 words to verify what I've written (I've become a one-thumb touch-typist...in addition to a two-thumb)

BB while driving

I use my 7100G for directions. I'll copy them from mapblast and paste them in a calendar item's note section, synch and I'm out the door. I just wish I could change the text a little more so it's easier for me to see 287 E or W. I don't ever pick it up to send an e-mail or sms though, it's one thing to risk my life and people in other cars and that's bad enough, but my 2 year old? NEVER! Heck, I don't even look at the screen before I answer a call via bluetooth headset. I just throw caution to the wind and pick it up. It only takes a second (okay, maybe 2) to get into serious trouble. Be careful out there!!!

Ayinde78 08-22-2005 03:19 PM

I have had my 7520 for about a week and a half now and caught myself driving and typing. Dangerous is the word that comes to mind. I swear it off from this point forward.

bperkins 08-22-2005 03:32 PM

Do it occasionally, more so at a stop light.

TheWastedYears 08-22-2005 03:53 PM

As I read through this thread, I'm currently facing a license suspension for getting 3 speeding tickets in 2 yrs (apparently, that's a law specific to MD) and I'm thinking... am I really the danger on the roadways?

Soapm 08-22-2005 04:41 PM

You ever get that level 1 alert, you just glance to see who it's from. Because it's from XXX you have to see what they said. Now you got to repond because you don't want to leave them hangin.

Funny story, I'm at this bad accident on I25. So bad the flew in flight for life so the entire interstate was shut down in my direction. I fugure what the heck, traffic was not even inching along in my direction so I lift up the arm rest, slide over to the passengar seat, leaned the seat way back, crank up the old tunes and started in on some mail.

I got mail going on with the music so loud I don't hear the horns honking or the officer tapping on my window with his night stick. I looked up when the helicopter came, they had backed all the cars to the previous exit (we were right there, a few feet) and were sending all the cars down that ramp and up the other side. It was like I was sitting in the middle of a abandoned interstate. Me, all the rescue people and a flight for life helicoptor trying to land. The officer said, "you must really like that BB">>>

That's a funky sticker - shame I already have a yellow window sticker in the back of my car. It reads "Back off, I've got 5 points"!!!!!!!!
