Cannot use internet while on a call??!!

I'm new to tmobile and noticed my data is not available when I'm on a phone call. Is this only a problem with tmobile?
Never had this issue with ATT blackberry. I thought 3G was capable of doing calls and data at same time?

It is, but are you sure you're in a 3G coverage area? If you drop to EDGE during a phone call, then you will not have data.

Yes I'm in 3G area...I ended up calling tmobile and they confirmed that their network does not support using certain data features while on a call. What a rip off.

What features might they be "missing"? If you have 3G, I have always been able to use the Internet and e-mail while on a call.

It does not matter whether you are in a 3G area - what matters is what the indicators read on the BlackBerry. 3G is 3G. EDGE is not.

Frankly, I think the person you spoke to was incorrect.

Yep.

Wonder if it has something to do with the 1700 MHz spectrum that t-mo uses - or at leas their implementation?

I have a 9700 and it can browse the Internet and receive mail while on a call. Of course, it has to have a 3G signal and not fail back to EDGE or GPRS (which is will do).

Is your 9700 on ATT or tmobile?? Last month when I had a 9700 on ATT I could use the internet and be on a call. Now I'm with tmobile and I've noticed I cannot.
I recall an ATT commercial where they were poking fun of tmobile and making the claim that their 3G could allow you to multitask...now I get it.

My 9700 is on T-Mobile. Was, is, and always has been. IF (and only if) the call is on 3G, I can browse and do e-mail.

AT&T was poking fun at Verizon. Verizon's 3G can't do both voice and Internet.

Re: Cannot use internet while on a call??!!

I'll confirm.... I'm on T-Mobile and I tested when I first got the 9700 and had the first opportunity to test when I had 3G signal, just because I thought it was so cool......If you have 3G signal, you can do data and voice at the same time.

To repeat, being in a 3G area doesn't matter if your device drops to EDGE or GPRS.

If you have an AT&T 3G blackberry on the T-Mobile network then that would be a different matter because the two use different 3G radio frequency and your AT&T blackberry would not be connecting at 3G. But a T-Mobile 3G blackberry on the T-Mobile network and connected at 3G will do data and voice at the same time.

Re: Cannot use internet while on a call??!!

If it is an AT&T 9700, unlocked and running on T-Mo, then it would be EDGE only since ATT and T-Mo operate on different 3G frequencies.

I was referring to a 9700 I had on ATT. I sold it on this site when I got the 9780 with tmobile. Its locked to tmobile.
I guess that's where the problem lies...I'm in a 3G area but I do notice that it regularly drops to EDGE. Also something my 9700 on ATT would not do so frequently.

Re: Cannot use internet while on a call??!!

I've had a range of experiences. I've been in solid 3G where my 9700 is always on 3G and I never see it drop to EDGE.

The worst for me in my experience is ATL. I'll have 3G and then data will come to a halt when I move to another location. I'll do a soft reset and get EDGE, but the data is flowing. I don't know if it's the building, congestion on 3G, or both.

And then I've been in places like my home town which is just now getting 3G, and I roll in and out of 3G all the time. Sometimes in the same spot I'll go between 3G and EDGE seemingly as the sun moves across the sky.

Yeah who knows. I was a long time ATT customer with numerous blackberry's and it just seems their network was more reliable.

Re: Cannot use internet while on a call??!!

I'm in cali, los angeles area.

Majority of the areas I go to have 3G.

However, majority of the places, if i'm on a phone call, i will lose 3G and it will drop to GPRS which is frustrating.

There's a couple spots where it will hold 3G.

I've heard it was a known issue and software updates should fix it.

Honestly, I blame the 1700mhz spectrum.

I wish t-mo would have converted all their existing bands to 3G, like AT&T did. Then the two could have roamed off each other for 3G.

Re: Cannot use internet while on a call??!!

The problem is T-Mobile doesn't OWN the spectrum that we all want, so we can use the same devices (and roam) between AT&T and T-Mobile.
