Help on Blackberry bold 9700 lost in india

Hi,

I have just lost my blackberry bold 9700 on Saturday night (30th november, 2010) near by my office.

i am using Airtel service as my carrier and i have asked them to stop the service from provider.

I am having my IMEI number and personal PIN number of blackberry and done police complaint and registered F.I.R.

I searched a lot in google for lost blackberry phones, and all of them are suggesting way like GPS and third party applications., but in india there isn't any GPS service as per my knowledge (may be i am wrong), so its not useful for me.

Please suggest me a way to track my blackberry.

I miss my :bb: so much. :?

Please help me guyz.

Thank you so much in advance.

Thanks,
Arpit Modi

You can't track your device unless you installed GPS tracking software on it before it was lost.
The G in GPS stands for GLOBAL... so it should definitely be available in India, unless there's a lead umbrella covering the entire country. ;)

(By the way, this past Saturday night was still October.)

Hi penguin3107,

Thanks for your response.
Yeah it was october, my mistake (due to depression )

Well actually i haven't tried GPS on my phone or haven't installed any GPS software. Is there any one from india who is using GPS in india?

Is there any other way to track the phone from IMEI or PIN ?

Thanks,
Arpit Modi

I don't think there is a way to track a device by its PIN/IMEI. I think Aussies are the only one that used to participate in blocking the IMEI so the new "fake" owner can not use the device ever.

The only social engg you could try is when you get a new BB, try to add the old PIN as your buddy and see if someone accepts and may be (if you are good in curiosity spying) able to connect with the person.
Good luck, I know you love the BB and lose of it really reminds you about its true value -:)

Hi joginder,

Thanks for your reply.
Well yes i have bought new blackberry curve, and added my old PIN to this new bb, but it does not seems he/she has approved my request.

Lets see.

Is there anything else we can do except adding PIN ?

Please suggest.

Thanks,

It's best solution is buy a new device because If people pick up your phone does not use BES or BIS, the GPS device is not working and you can not find it through bringing GPS

Arpit,
I can not think of any other way to get to the to lost device. I know how frustrating it is. Its always a good idea to password lock the device and take weekly backups so if you ever lose the device you can always restore the backup on to the new device and life doesnt stop there.

There is a huge diff in financial cost between the "lost device" and "lost info". That. you can always PIN me otherwise this forums #1.
PIN: 216B6BA7
Good Luck

the amount of data one keeps in thier BB these days is immense and id suggest you dload Buddyguard or such app to retrieve the data from a lost BB. weekly backup is ofcourse another way to not lose your data. the apps however can also help you ERASE data from your lost BB.

I won't add to what has been said above. It is all good information. But I would change all your passwords on the email accounts come to your BB. I would also use BBM to tell all of your contacts the new PIN and why you have a new one.

Then as said above use a password to lock the device and make regular backups of the data.

Yes its true that we have loads of loads of data/sensitive info on these devices but I believe that with enough social engineering we can protect it.
a Simple password on BB is itself a good protection and on top of that I am using smrtGuard/Lookout etc and i think I am safe. I keep a back up (weekly) of data so in case I lose the BB I will be able to restore the file as soon as get access to internet and new device.
At least life doesn't stop there. And I dont work for "Dept of Sensitive Information" so most of data on my memory card is just the pics and podcasts so I'm not too worried about. Again assess your situation yourself and take necessary steps !!
