Which Brainiac @ Verizon releases Tour OS upgrade right on a short holiday week?

Well imagine my surprise.

On a holiday, when every Verizon store is closed and Verizon support is probably on half staff, a new text pops into my phone in the area where text messages normally are (hey, why have a different area - lets screw up the icon everyone is using to normally get to SMS message and hose them until they figure out how to get around that!) telling me an update is available.

The message refuses to go away, no option to "tell me again in two days", hide message, etc.

Why the heck would they release an update at this time?

Does this hit anyone else as monumentally stupid?

"Let's get everyone to update their OS on a holiday shortened week! Sounds good to me Bob! Verizon will be short staffed, and many companies IT guys will be trying to spend a quiet day at home with the family. Fabulous idea!"

You're just not a happy fella are you?

Why would you care if it came on a holiday week? Big deal, it doesn't require hand-holding to perform the upgrade. Just do a backup of the device first, and get on with it.

Not from reading all the posts on problems.

It just makes no sense to not wait a week and release after Thanksgiving week.

I think I would have less of an issue if the thing didn't take over the SMS text icon and hold it hostage ... it's not insurmountable, but it's a pain.

lbrty9 11-26-2009 11:15 AM

Is it 5.0?

JSanders 11-26-2009 11:19 AM

What in the world are talking about holding your SMS icon hostage? Just read the message and clear the new notification.

It's not a pain. Sheesh, have you ever upgraded a device before?

And what upgrade is it? Do you even know?

There is no option to clear the notification. You can't get rid of it.

Have you ever worked for an IT dept that has hundreds of BBs assigned out? How would you like to be on call on Thanksgiving when hundreds of people get a "you need to upgrade" message?

There's more to it than you are thinking.

KonTiki 11-26-2009 11:57 AM

You would have that problem with that many BBS no matter what day of the week or holiday week it was. People need to chill out the owners of the hundreds of BBS as well as you, record a message and leave your answering machine on. This so called take over of the icon does not impair any operation of the phone.

wizzy420 11-26-2009 11:59 AM

There's still simply no reason to do this on a holiday week. And I would rather have those problems on a day which isn't a holiday, than on a day which is. I don't think that "You would have that problem with that many BBS no matter what day of the week or holiday week it was" really means anything. I could say, conversely, if your website is going to hacked/DDoSs you would be just as happy if it happened any day of the week, or on your wedding day, as it creates the same amount of work either way.

You can argue about how hard it is or isn't, the relative safety or lack thereof.

But look at the change list. What was so important that Verizon could not wait a week?

To think that Verizon could test and foresee any possible problems, or lack thereof, when rolling out an update to hundreds of thousands of phones is ludicrous.

It's just a bad idea, and poorly conceived on Verizon's part.

I can imagine there are people happy that it was released over a long weekend, and others that would go nonlinear if they found out it was ready for release and being held until next week.

Different strokes. No need to get hyper.

JSanders 11-26-2009 12:19 PM

Ho hum. Go eat some turkey and get over yourself.

But to answer your main question and settle this: Verizon would do this, yes, that is the kind of people who do this to you. They're probably hoping that by pushing the upgrade on a short holiday week while they're off they might not have to take your phone call. ;-) That's how I see it.

All the angry people, where do they all belong?

Apologies to Paul, John, George, and Ringo.

Easily Translated: I don't want to do the job which I'm paid for.

To bad, move to a better job other then tech support, if you don't feel like explaining this over any holiday.

If I was your boss, I would terminate your position and hire an H1B.

RIM is a Canadian company and Verizon is largely owned by Vodafone in the U.K. Thanksgiving is a U.S. holiday. Mystery solved.

This is the first time I've heard someone complain that an update was made available too early. Usually folks are whining about lack of updates. Just ask the Nokia N95-3 owners.

jpcalhoun 11-27-2009 10:38 AM

Ok, so what version did they release?

JSanders 11-27-2009 11:09 AM

The OP was too mad to ever say ;-)

But since he did say "tour" in the thread title, I assume he meant the 4.7.1.61 upgrade is being pushed by Verizon now.

Noodle22 11-27-2009 04:31 PM

Know what's weird? Tour shows up in the thread title, but the title of the webpage doesn't have the word "tour" in it for me. just says '...Verizon releases OS upgrade right on a short holiday.."

Anyone else notice that?

SteveO86 11-27-2009 08:53 PM

Connect to your BES and send mass Pin/Email message telling users to disregard the last OS Upgrade NOW message :) Not rocket science.

That's because this was posted in the Tour forum, and the ops moved it to R&R

I edited later to put Tour somewhere in the post.

Noodle22 11-28-2009 11:07 AM

Ahh, just thought it was weird it showed on the thread title but not the page title. Haha, thanks for the info.
