Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

Hi,

Looking for some help from the Z10 owners or Blackberry support.

Background:

. Purchased an new unlocked Z10, STL-100-3, running 10.1.0.4181
. Mobile Carrier is SpeakOut (711) which is on Rogers network
. Purchased a new micro SIM card from Carrier
. Boot up and see Rogers logo with APN set to default "ltemobile", no username, no password

Problem:
. Cannot browse Internet when on cellular network after purchased browsing add-on from SpeakOut
. SpeakOut support page has clear instructions on APN setup with username & password (apn=goam.com, username=wapuser1, pw=wap)
. Z10 APN setting is default to "ltemobile", no username, password, fields are grey out and cannot be edited so it did not connect

What I tried after reading hours of online forum discussions but still no connection:
. Using "escreen://", change APN to "goam.com", but I cannot find a place to edit/add username & pw
. Per Rogers web site, changed APN to "rogers-core-appl1.apn", "internet.com" without username & PW
. Yes, I hard rebooted Z10 after every change

Everything else on Z10 works fine, Wifi connection, voice call etc, however, cannot browse internet when Wifi is not availabile, I suspect is due to the incorrect APN settings

Can anyone tell me where to enter the APN username & password or have a solution to this issue?

I called SpeakOut and they said follow the APN settings, if it does not work then it is a device issue, I cannot find how to reach Blackberry support directly.

SpeakOut is a good discount carrier for a casual user like me, performance is not a major issue for me, I do not want to lock into more expensive contracts with Rogers, Bell or Telus

Thanks in advance

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

Hello gnowegroeg,

Welcome to the forums.

Open your settings>Network Connections>Mobile Networks>APN

Before deleting ltemobile.apn, first type in both your Username+Password
Username: wapuser1
Password: wap

Then type goam.com in the APN input box. Hit save. You should see a green checkmark beside the APN when save is pressed.

On your mobile network screen you will see ROGERS 3G, but your apps will only continue to be used on WiFi (for now)

Hi Zombieberry,

Really appreciate the quick reply.

Unfortunately, my major issue is that the APN / Username / Password are all grey out and not editable in /network connections/mobile network/APN, that's why I have to use "escreen://" to edit the APN but I cannot find where to edit APN username and password.

Thanks

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

It sounds like the device sees your SIM as a Rogers SIM and is removing the ability to edit the APN just like AT&T does here in the US. You may be out of luck.

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

Oh...sorry.

Do the escreen:// thing again, and click on "Data Services"

You should see a screen with Logical Connections (Internet/CARRIER_APPS/CARRIER_ADMIN, etc) As for what information goes where? I can't really answer that. I have never had to manually add APN settings from there. It has always worked under settings.

Where did you buy your device? Has it been unlocked?

Can you try it with a dead microSIM?

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

I am reluctant to edit more than the APN name under "General Radio" using "escreen://", someone mentioned that may inadvertently affect other functions of the phone.

The (Internet/CARRIER_APPS/CARRIER_ADMIN, etc) you mentioned are under "Data Services" but I do not see any username / Password fields, also, it seems like the APN field is auto populated from the APN field in "General Radio".

According to /Settings/Security amd Privacy/SIM Card/:
Network is unlocked
Network Subset is unlocked
Service Provider is unlocked

So I believe the device is unlocked.

I do not have a dead microsim card to try, wonder what that would do to help?

Thanks

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

Hi,

Still looking for help here, I was able to find a Rogers PayGo microsim card to try in my Z10, once plug in, the phone works perfectly browsing the internet using default APN "ltemobile.apn", no username/password, with wifi turned off so I know it is not the phone but the setting required for SpeakOut carrier.

So far, I tried using APN "ltemobile.apn", "rogers-core-appl1.apn" & "goam.com" without username and password on SpeakOut, none of them works.

I am pretty sure the phone will work if I can input the APN username and password in addition to the APN in "escreen://" to the ones specified by SpeakOut. (currently, they are greyed out in settings>Network Connections>Mobile Networks>APN)

Anyone know where the APN username / Password is hidden under "escreen://" or somewhere else or how to make the greyed out fileds in APN editable?

Blackberry support specialists? Anyone?

Thanks

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

Only two solutions, and none of them involve the escreen.

1. Call your carrier and ask to be bumped to BB support. I am not even sure this is an option, as I am unsure if your device is even supported by your carrier.

2. Download and install a leaked version of 10.2 and your APN settings should no longer be unlocked. (Checked with a Network unlocked Rogers Z10 (STL-100-3) running OS v 10.2.0.1047)

I have checked four forums, and some MVNO (Like SpeakOut) subscribers are suffering the same issues.

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

Zombieberry,

"install a leaked version of 10.2 and your APN settings should no longer be unlocked", I hope you meant "should no longer be locked"? :-)

Asking SpeakOut to help with an "unsupported" phone will likely be a waste of time.

Do you have any idea when 102.x will be officially released? If it is not too long, maybe I will wait rather than loading a leak version.

Thanks for your reply and help, much appreciated.

Yes, no longer locked. I have no clue when 10.2 may be released. I hope soon.

According to news from crackberry site, 10.2 will be officially released in October pending approval and rollout by individual carriers, I will wait and upgrade accordingly.

Please consider this thread closed.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

Upgraded to 10.2.0.424, unfortunately, the APN username / Password fields are still locked, greyed out, not editable. Fields like "MMSC", MMS Proxy", "MMS port" are still nowhere to be found for edit. These fields are easily accessible, editable in iPhone, Samsung, Nokia.

Really frustrated about not being able to browse internet on the road, not sure how BB can compete with others when issue like this lingers on.

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

The only thing I can think of is that the device is locked to Rogers. I know in your OP you state it is unlocked, but my unit is unlocked and I am with Rogers and I can change my APN settings.

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

Thanks for your continue support, how can one tell is the phone is indeed "unlocked"? The phone came brand new from BB.

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

Settings>Security and Privacy>SIM Card> Scroll to the bottom where it says Network subset and Service provider. What does it say beside there?

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

All fields you mentioned are listed as "Unlocked"

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

You ordered the device directly from BlackBerry? Should be showing "INACTIVE" or "DISABLED" So the device is locked. I believe we found the issue.

gnowegroeg 11-06-2013 02:35 PM

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

ok, thanks, I thought "Unlocked" in those fields meant the phone is unlocked.

No, I did not purchase the phone directly from BB, it was purchased through 2 layers of friends to an ex-BB employee, now, I have to find a way to return or exchange the phone, maybe difficult or real time consuming considering the corporate business issues they are going through now. Glad I kept all the paper trail.

Really appreciate your help on this.

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

You could always use a device unlocking service.

No worries, it can be frustrating when things do not work as intended.

Re: Help - How to edit APN settings in Z10

I am also a Speakout user with a z10 and am having the same problems. The difference is that I had my phone unlocked by cellunlocker and it is still doing the same thing. My settings also all say "unlocked". Are we sure that the phone is still locked unless it says "disabled"? I am going to try to contact Cellunlocker and see if they have any information for me.

Thanks! Lisa
