Tethering BlackBerry with a Mac

The instruction contained in this post have been confirmed to work with the following BlackBerry devices:
8310, 8900, 9000

Tethering w/ Mac via USB
BlackBerry Tethering via USB on a Mac
Thanks adileoxfxanis!

Tethering w/ Mac via Bluetooth

NOTE: When using an OS 4.6.0.194+ you must perform the PPPD Replacement procedure (this is not needed on Mac OS 10.6). Instruction found here:
Et-Setera » BlackBerry Bold PPPD Replacement.

Here is what I have done:

1.) On your Blackberry, go to Options > Advanced Options > TCP and populate your carriers APN settings. A comprehensive list of carrier APN settings can be found here.
*Skipping this step will result in a "PPP Server" error.
2.) Extract the Modem Script from the attached .zip file and place it in the Mac HD > Library > Modem Scripts folder. Be sure you place it in the root Library folder and not the Library folder associated with your User folder. Do not launch or open the file, this is unnecessary.

BlackBerry 3G CID1.zip

3.) Pair your phone with the Mac. Be sure you have set it up as a Trusted Connection and is set to "Yes" and not "Ask".

4.) In Bluetooth Preferences, select your phone in the list, and then click "Configure this device". This will launch the Bluetooth Setup Assistant.

5.) Check the "Access Internet..." and proceed.

6.) Select "Other" for Vendor, and "Blackberry 3G CID1" (name of the modem script) for Phone Model. Leave the Username, Password, and Phone Number blank. Continue.

7.) Launch Network Preferences, and click "Bluetooth" in the list.

8.) Select "Add Configuration" from the Configuration drop list. Name the configuration something you can identify. I use my carrier name (AT&T).

9.) Populate the remaining fields with your APN information, using the wap server URL as the Telephone Number.
Example for AT&T :
Telephone Number:wap.cingular
Account Name: http://www.blackberryforums.com/?ema...99526b95997cb8
Password: CINGULAR1
A comprehensive list of carrier APN settings can be found here.
10.) Check "Show modem status in menu bar"

11.) Click Advanced, and verify the information is correct.
Modem
 • Vendor = Other
 • Model = Blackberry 3G CID1
 • Enable Error... = checked
 • Dial Mode = Wait for dial tone before dialing
 • Dialing = Tone
 • Sound = On
DNS
 • -All Blank-
WINS
 • -All Blank- (NetBIOS may be populated and disabled)
Proxies
 • Configure Proxies = Using a PAC file
PPP
 • Settings = Session
 • Third, Fourth, Fifth and Seventh items checked. Redial 1 Time, and Wait 5 Seconds before redialing
That's it. You are ready to tether.

Enable Bluetooth on your phone, and then on the Mac. Click the modem icon from the menu bar, and select Connect Bluetooth. After a few seconds you should see a connection timer.

Disclaimer: Tethering on a mobile device while there is not a tethering plan associated with your account may result in charges being imposed by your carrier. While many people have tethered for years without a tethering plan, and have not been 'caught', many people have had charges levied after only a few hours of use. I am in no way responsible for the actions of, or the charges levied by, carriers as a result of following the instructions posted above. Please proceed with caution.

Thanks for the FAQ....worked like a charm.

Only thing I am finding is slooooow speeds though on 3G around 1mbps up and 0.945mbps/down.

I'm on T-mobile and I have my 9700 working with my mac snow leopard. What my problem is now is that when I browse on my laptop browsers (Safari & Firefox), I keep getting redirected to web2go. T-Mobile customer care says that I have a data plan and I know I pay for it, but why won't my browser go anywhere else? I have had the problem on the phone itself, but all I do is go into the browser options and change it back to Internet Browser or Blackberry Browser and it works fine. It's entirely different on my mac. Any ideas anyone?

I'm also wondering about speeds. I just switched from an HTC HD2 and I'm getting about 1/5 the speed through tethering that I would get from the HD2 (enough to stream netflix HD).

I really appreciate your taking the time to put up instructions though! Some tethering is better than no tethering at all. :)

Try using the Sierra Wireless settings, select GSM. It works for me and I seem to have better speed. I read this solution in another forum as well.
