Is the Pearl 8220 Flip doing well?

I have not seen a single person with this device aside from one coworker who was given one at a conference. While this might not seem significant, to me it is, as I work for the very company that offers it! I am based in Atlanta right now and I want to know if the device is more popular in other areas.

I really like it and have one on the way, fortunately I don't have to pay for it, but was wondering if it is something that those of you who already have it are enjoying. Once the novelty wears off is it really a useful BlackBerry?

One of the BBF moderators is using it.

cybermikey3 10-23-2008 09:39 PM

i got it...love it

strike2tamu 10-23-2008 10:24 PM

think its doing alright so far.

I have one. Love it. Once people see it, they are interested.

The fact that you don't see a device that has been out for less than one week is not really significant, right?

I know quite a few people who don't like it simply because of how that piece sticks out the back once its open. Shallow if you ask me, but it is an existing cosmetic issue.

You get used to it. It's a great BlackBerry. President of one of our divisions (and his admin) got them today. That certainly will increase the number of people who follow along and get them...

So I take it its not having all the launch issues like the bold? Sweet :)

UMA works great.
Device has not so much as burped since I got in all of 4 days ago.
So far, very stable. Haven't had to restart it unless I wanted to.

And our 16 year old daughter got hers tonight and LOVES it - so it certainly will work in the consumer market. Took her all of 15 minutes to get it customized.

How is it with memory? Have you needed to do any battery pulls because of that matter?

I never seemed to have leaky memory (which means I wasn't running the programs that leaked).

Right now - and all I did was remove the IM programs I don't need - it has 66,837,321 bytes free. Yep - 66mb. Out of 128 :-)

Man, I'm jealous. I wish I had stuck it out with my silly 8800 for a little bit longer because I really did have my eye on this device.

Oh well, I'll keep it in mind for a future phone. Glad to hear that it's doing so well!

Mine works well

I received my flip on Tuesday. I haven't had any issues with it so far. The only complaint I have is with the speakerphone. I cannot close the phone while it is on speaker without disconnecting the call. There is probably a setting somewhere, haven't had time to dig into the settings yet. It fits in my pocket nice, sometimes smaller is better. A lot of people at work are just now getting them.

i think the $149 price it too much considering you can buy an iPhone for $199. once the pearl flip his $49, it should sell great.

NJBlackBerry 10-24-2008 10:40 AM

Good luck with waiting for that price. $99 maybe.

Got delivery of 5 Flips 2 days ago... 2 of the 5 have been deployed... played with one for a day and found it very usable, something I can get used to....Speakerphone is extra crisp . . has a nice light weight . . . about the same size as a VZW-Mot W385 and TMO Mot W490... easily connected to WiFi and used UMA calling. . . browsed internet without BB Data plan with a little APN tweak...

Overall: 4 stars out of 5

The wife has hers and other than UMA being kind of flaky, she loves it. She gets a little tweaked when I put my hands on it and start tinkering with it. She is now evangilizing the merits of the Blackberry Flip and Blackberries in general.

Just curious about your broadband speed resulting in flaky UMA . . . were you on DSL? . . . I do get flaky UMA on my 8820 at certain hotspots, but get very decent VOIP when connected to cable broadband . . .

wobly 10-24-2008 02:18 PM

I have cable internet, but the speed or type of internet isn't really the issue. I have an 8320 that uses UMA just fine with no issues whatsoever. I have a Linksys WRT54G router running DD-WRT that works just fine. The 8220 connects to the router, but would occasionally drop back to EDGE for no reason and then reconnect. Also, when on UMA, the wife had a couple of dropped calls. She does NOT like that! So, I turned her UMA off and the issues went away. That is why I am presuming that the UMA just isn't working well with this build.
