HORRIBLE MEMORY LEAK ON BOLD!! Post your Before/After Battery Pulls Here

I wanted to get a feel for what other Bold owners are experiencing with they're devices. I know it has been mentioned before but the memory leak is BAD on these things. I lose on average 10MB of memory a day. That is WAAAAYYYY worse than Beta Curve OS's ever did.

Aug. 31st - 38118465 bytes
Sep. 1st - 28219634 bytes
Sep. 2nd - 19118475 bytes (Before battery pull)

After Battery Pull:
Sep. 2nd - 38334624 bytes

Post your results here so we can gauge the average users loss.

Sept 2 18mb
Sept 2 after battery pull 28mb
Sept 2 within 30 min of pull 26.3 mb

Without posting the version you are running this is almost useless...
Plus what other apps do you have, do you use the browser?
There is no horrible memory leak.

bbcan007 09-02-2008 09:01 PM

okay clean bold no new stuff installed . use bb maps ,weather ,and email weather updates 2 times aday . still 25.9mb free on meneroy page .also says device memory 859.2mb total space and free 858.8mb .have had bold since aug28

John Clark 09-02-2008 09:38 PM

Does it ever run out? If you don't pull the battery does it delete your emails and call logs?

How is it useless exactly?

Running 4.6.0.126 (Platform 4.0.0.135)

Browser cache doesn't matter. Clear it out after every session. No 3rd Party apps. Your signature information shows you have an 8310.. Not a Bold.. So, how can you know that there's no memory leak on a device you don't use.

No JC, hasn't done that yet. Just makes me a little weary losing close to 10MB a day in flash memory...

JSanders 09-02-2008 09:49 PM

Am I missing something about your chart, or is it out of order, or did you lose 20MB, then regain 10MB, and then another 10, on the same day?

It varies and fluctuates throughout the day. It's all normal. Normal.

Good eye! Fixed it.. Had to grab the DeLorean and gun it up to 88 to fix it though.

Thanks JSanders!

Memory leak definitely exists. It was much worse in previous OS builds.

Upgrade to 4.6.0.134, it improves the memory leak issue over 4.6.0.126. It did for me.

Which carrier version is 4.6.0.134 - is it a Rogers release?

Is this kind of thing really a memory leak? Doesn't it depend how memory is managed?

Think of the difference between Vista and XP. Vista seems to use available free memory much more readily as cache to pre-load and *keep* stuff cached that MAY be used later, rather than free the memory as soon as XP would. Makes Vista's memory footprint LOOK enormous, but not necessarily a problem.

Maybe the BB OS is going the same way, in principle. No point in having free memory doing NOTHING. Might as well leave stuff cached there once it's there. The key is what happens when more RAM *needs* freeing. My Curve, for example, on .55 progressively shows less free RAM after a reboot (down from 12+ MB to under 8). But then I see it go up again sometimes, and it doesn't seem to go below about 7 ever. So not a practical problem, so far.

A memory leak would be proven if the free memory continues to fall, and can't be/isn't increased by the OS when required, to the point where it affects the operation of the device, which presumably will eventually slow to a crawl and/or crash and/or start trying to free memory by wiping your old SMSs, email etc. Is this happening?

In an ideal world you would have ZERO free memory showing, as the OS would perfectly cache everything until it HAD to make room for something else...

Just my 2c. I'm possibly talking bolox here ;-)

The Sky Is Falling, The Sky Is Falling!

49.4mb before
49.8mb after

Lol!

That's exactly how the Java Virtual Machine works. The garbage collector runs periodically and frees any obvious stuff but doesn't get aggressive until the amount of free memory gets close to critical. If you watch a graph of used memory in any Java virtual machine, it looks like a sawtooth.

Is it possible that the term "memory leak" is being used a bit too liberally? As far as I know, memory is supposed to be used, and all OS based devices should be rebooted periodically, so where is the problem?

John Clark 09-03-2008 05:40 PM

java uses a garbage collection system that runs all the time and does this automatically. As long as there is enough free memory it should fluctuate on it's own. If you read through some of the Aftermarket Software threads and read posts from developers they shed some light on this. I know I wrote a post to get the most memory but people seem to think it's a contest to always have the most free memory at any given time. You just need enough there for the device to use. It's just using it.

thadada 09-03-2008 08:23 PM

excuse me, but how do you check exactly how much ram you have? thank you.
also, what is the total ram we have?

babsblackberry 09-03-2008 09:25 PM

Just did a battery pull, details below;

Before @ 11:52 - 18198108
After @ 11:55 - 34476012
Checked @ 12:18 - 33779428

Just a bit concerning....

With other OS', you set the max amount it can buffer and with the BB OS, it just uses it until there isn't any memory left (then the call logs, messages and everything else gets deleted instead). I don't care if it uses free memory, but with no max allotment, it eventually becomes a problem. I would do a battery pull on my Curve once a week, but with 10MB a day getting eaten up, it will be every 3-4 with the Bold.

Options>Status. It will be the File Free category. Total memory available depends on the user. If you uninstalled everything, your probably looking at 45-50MB. Average user is about 30-35MB.
