WiFi Calling triggers reboot loop

After 5 months of stable operation with my Blackberry 9810 with 7.1.0.284, it started rebooting continuously. It took several rounds, but I noticed the problem happened just as the rebooted Blackberry synced to WiFi. If I moved fast, I was able to turn off the radio in the reboot process before WiFi started.

I discovered that it wasn't the WiFi connection, but the start of WiFi Calling (an additional layer of syncing with TMO servers after the WiFi data connection is going). So if I'm connected via WiFi to a router with ports blocked in a way that WiFi calling can't work, but a WiFi data connection is working -- no problem. If the WiFi calling links up, BOOM, the Blackberry goes into a reset loop.

I tried updating the OS to 7.1.0.569, hoping the problem would go away. I wiped both data, applications, and the old OS off before loading the new OS. I did restore the old data.

Same problem -- the new OS boots and is fine until I attempt a WiFi connection that links to WiFi Calling. It is certainly the WiFi Calling since it happens as the WiFi Calling permission box appears in the new OS load.

This just started this week after I did a routine Atl-Shift-BackSpace reboot.

Since WiFi Calling is supposedly all software-based, I assume this is software, not hardware. But TMO wants to replace the phone.

Thoughts? Anyone else ever see this?

There is some network issue with wifi calling on the OS.7.1 models. Your assessment is correct.

There are a number of people over on the T-Mobile support forum with the same exact symptoms. Most of those say the problem seems to have gone away as of this morning.

As reported by one of the rep's they are looking into it. They advise resetting the router and the BlackBerry to see if that corrects the problem.

The workaround is to set the BlackBerry to mobile network only for calls. This will allow wifi for data but disable wifi calling and avoid the rebooting issue.

Interestingly, my wife and I are not seeing it. Both of us have 9900's. Seems those having trouble are in the west.

Re: WiFi Calling triggers reboot loop

Thank you! Now I have to call TMO and question their offer to send a new 9810 replacement.

The problem went away by 11am PDT for me. I've been resetting my router regularly as I've tried to debug this. And the Blackberry has been resetting itself (plus I've done countless battery pulls).

At 10am I tried resending the BIS service books. I'd already done all the other BES bits, Host Routing Table/Registrations, and calling of TMO to have them send service books.

From 10am until 11am, I couldn't get WiFi Calling (in spite of resetting the router and the Blackberry). Then at 11am, I got WiFi Calling again without the phone resetting.

So it looks like the issue got fixed just before 11am PDT for at least my area of Los Angeles.

Fingers crossed it is fixed for good.

The Unsupported Browser support forum for the 9810 really shows it was a network event -- unless it was because some new bad certificates got pushed out.
