Unlocked my bb... now help needed!!!!....
 

Hey i am new to this...

I got a bb 8520 recently on vodafone network.... fully confident that i would simply be able to get it unlocked to use my "3" contract sim.

Ok to cut a long story short.... took a while for any signal to appear, but after a couple of hours i got signal and was able to send SMS and make/receive calls.

BUT i am having a tough time connecting to the net! it either comes up with a page saying, i am out of my service area (something along those lines) and if i can connect ITS SO SO SO SLOW! and the bar at the bottom of the screen says loading 0 data.

I cant get on to planet 3 either so i cant download my blackberry app thing.

I phoned my network provider...3 and they went thru my settings etc etc, although said to me as it is not a 3 handset they can not diagnose any errors....

i have turned my phone off numerous times as well as pulling the battery.

hope some one can shed some light on this..thanks :-(

THE first question is, Do you have a blackberry data plan on your account and is the blackberry registered on the service.

Note blackberry data service. There is a difference.

No no no... you need BLACKBERRY data... not pre-paid data.
BlackBerry devices require a monthly data subscription.

You'll want to call your wireless provider (3) and subscribe to a BlackBerry Data package.

You buy the BLACKBERRY data service from the same provider selling you voice service. It is different from regular mobile data service. You cannot use the blackberry data service on generic mobile data service.

BlackBerrys are different.

i have a contract with my provider....i pay monthly i have like 500 mins, unlimited sms unlimited internet and an add on internet......

Read the replies. Talk to your mobile service provider. Either buy the BlackBerry service or do something else.

If you confirm that you are paying for BlackBerry service, then we can work the problem. But no BlackBerry service = no BlackBerry service.

when i signed up with 3 my phone was a blackberry.... but it broke so they sent me a replacement phone that was an INQ chat..... i hated it so i got a blackberry for xmas andjust got it unlocked... im in United Kingdom btw

Nope. Lots of Brits get it.. The Blackberry requires a special plan, or tariff, as opposed to the pre paid plans you have.

Contact your carrier and ask them about a Blackberry data plan.

It's not the british thing.

You say you are paying for internet service, yada yada yada, but it must be the service specific for BlackBerrys in order to use the BlackBerry data services. This must be the fifth repeat of that fact.

Confirm what you bought. If it is indeed BlackBerry service, then we can sort it out.

If it isn't BlackBerry service then there is nothing you can do, except buy the service if you want it.

How many times have new members posted like this where they have been sold a blackberry and service, but not a blackberry data plan? I'm guessing several times a day every day since I've been here.

oh dear....

Phoned 3 network... they have told me i do have bb data service.........so thats that little hiccup sorted..... they said they would send me internet settings via text.... they tried twice but they never arrived....

There are no settings that they can send you via text message.
I think you either misunderstood what you were being told, or perhaps you just spoke to a support representative who had no idea what they were talking about.


I sincerely doubt you have the proper BlackBerry Data service required to use your device.
If you did, it would simply work.

What does the signal indicator read on your phone?
GSM? gprs? GPRS? edge? EDGE? 3g? 3G? 3G BB?
Upper and lower case letters make a big difference. Be specific.

gem, go to blackberryfaq.com and read the articles on BIS, etc. Read the one with a title something like, What Do I Need a Blackberry Data Plan For? and also the one on using blackberry on a generic data plan.

Perhaps your carrier said they would send the APN settings, but who knows. But penguin is right. The BlackBerry data plan will just work once the service books get pushed to the handset.

My advice is first answer penguin's question, then go read those articles. Then find out exactly, by product name, what you are paying for (look at your contract), and then look it up and see what it is and what it includes.

I'm betting you are not paying for BIS.

Well, gemchanel have you sorted it out?

By the way BIS = BLACKBERRY INTERNET SERVICE.
Without BIS you cannot surf unlimitedly on your berry or send blackberry instant messages.
