The 'new' os 4.2.1

Does anyone know how I can download and get the 4.2.1 os? currently I am running the 4.2.0.67. Is this old or...? The links I've looked at seem to have an "italian" link to the new os download..is this right??

Sorry if this is a newbie question...but I'm a newbie and I've been reading about some of the users who have got this new os. I've not got a BB service plan so I can't OTA anything. I'm currently living in Thailand but can load software using my friend's PC (I have a mac). Any insights? Thanks!

It makes no difference what carrier released the OS. You can load it on any Pearl.

Make sure the latest Desktop Manager is installed. Currently 4.2 SP1
Download the above linked OS. Then double click on the file you downloaded to install it to the PC.
Delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
Plug in BB, open Desktop Manager and it should prompt you to upgrade.

The installation will appear to hang for up to 20 minutes at times with a spinning hourglass....be patient, and let it go.

Good luck.

does it matter that it is an Italian link?..I'm not quite sure why it says that...?

thanks a lot...I'll try this...in your opinion, is it worth the upgrade?

4.2.1 is only available for the 8800 at this time as far as I know.

Hi
Am I being silly but someone mentioned tethering to their macbook - how does a Mac user update the device software as the Desktop software doesn't work on Mac.

Can anyone help me on how to do this?

Thanks,
J

JC..in your opinion (yes I've read the 15 pages about 4.2.1) do YOU think the upgrade is worth it...or are there too many buggy cons..seems like people are 50-50..what do you think? cheers..

I too am running 4.2.0.67 and am using a Mac..as far as I know, the only option is to use a PC to install the upgrade for your Pearl..I hope to God Missing Sync comes out with a 3rd party install option one day soon....

Its not worth it... The os is very buggy. And on the Pearl it seems like the OS is in trial mode. Alot 4.2.1 features seem to work half the time or not all. The only that really worked was the browser features. But on the Pearl screen it just not the same.

I'm gonna have to go with tdawg on this one -- I downgraded as well, there are too many random problems that may, or may not, happen to you and your device. Some people have bluetooth headset problems and some don't. Some have spinning hourglass cursors, some don't.

If you're not a 'living on the edge' kind of phone person, stick to 4.2.0.71 or 4.2.0.73, they're really solid releases of code.

also if u use multitap there are issues with that.

skills73 04-07-2007 12:41 PM

anyone have a link then for the 4.2.71 or .73 that I can download? are they worth upgraded from 4.2.0.67?

I've just bought my Pearl here in Thailand..and that's the OS it came with...I've got an unlocked phone too...should this be an issue when I do upgrade from .67?

mike_187 04-07-2007 01:27 PM

yah go to the rim software section in the forums, u'll find a sticky there. you want cingular/at&t OS.

TheBigNewt 04-07-2007 02:31 PM

Some other forum dude posted screenshots last week of a new software update for Tmobile he's testing, so Tmobile users might want to wait. From what he gathered early on there wasn't anything too earthshaking added, but I didn't ask him about the hotly desired turn off autodim feature that the Italy update provides. IMO you should just look for new features in a software update. Don't bite on the old "it's faster, it's smoother" schtick. You hear that every time a new one comes out and then the noise dies down pretty fast.

I feel the same way, I downgraded back to .67.

Are .71 and .73 any different/better than 67?

Impaler80s 04-07-2007 03:18 PM

My first question to people that are dying to upgrade their devices is, what is your hurry? Is your device malfunctioning? Is it crashing? Or do you just have to have the latest? I would recommend you wait until your carrier makes it available....if you install it and it breaks your device, your carrier will just laugh at you and shake their heads. If you install the update from THEIR site, and it breaks your device, it's on them.

Be patient. It will come eventually.

skills73 04-07-2007 10:10 PM

agreed impaler..but I'm not with any carrier right now as I'm living in Thailand..so I guess i'm looking for just a stable upgrade from any carrier..does anybody know the differences upgrading from .67 to .71 or .73? Is THAT upgrade worth it?
