personal hotspot feature on Bold 9900 ?
What's the latest on the personal hotspot feature?
Is it available on the AT&T Blackberry Bold 9900 presumably after an OS 7.1 update? I just read this and it says that the personal hotspot feature is only available to some carriers like T-mobile. Re: personal hotspot feature on Bold 9900 ?
I am not sure. It would probably be best to speak to one of your carrier;s CSRs, or check the website to see exactly what is included in your plan.

I am interested in any unbranded roms that I can use for my AT&T issued device. Does a "homebrew" solution exist? I read this from another forum, but I haven't tested it yet. (soon, perhaps next week). http://forums.crackberry.com/blackbe...harges-680391/ |
Re: personal hotspot feature on Bold 9900 ?
There are no "homebrew" solutions. The ability to use the hotspot feature depends on what plan you have and what the carrier wants to charge you.

Re: personal hotspot feature on Bold 9900 ?
"Unbranded roms"?? It's a BlackBerry not an Android.
The Mobile Hotpot feature is dependent upon the carrier. They have the ability to block it completely. They also have the ability to charge for it's use (as with tethering) or not charge. Loading another carrier's OS does not have any affect on that. |
Re: personal hotspot feature on Bold 9900 ?
I was also looking forward to the hotspot feature but At&t told me they do not allow that, only tethering

Re: personal hotspot feature on Bold 9900 ?
I checked with VZW on the hotspot feature, and was told it's $20/month - however if you already use/currently pay for tethering...you can use the hotspot without additional charges.
I haven't been brave enough to upgrade my OS...if it ain't broke.... ;) |
Re: personal hotspot feature on Bold 9900 ?
OS version 7.1.0.163 works fine on the Verizon 9930. And the Mobile Hotspot feature works fine too as long as you have the tethering/mobile hotspot feature as noted above.

Re: personal hotspot feature on Bold 9900 ?
I have an unlocked 9930 running on AT&T (with OS 7.1). It prompts you for an APN but works like a dream after that (without a tethering plan).

@duane543: Do you know if your 9930 (I assume yours was acquired from Verizon?) will work on both Verizon's and ATT's networks? Here's the the situation: My company allows us a choice, so I could have chosen the Verizon 9930 but instead, I upgraded from the Bold 9000 to 9900 and just stayed on the ATT network. Should I have picked the Verizon 9930 instead? Hmmm.... I figured since Verizon's 4G on the berries are not LTE anyways, staying on ATT was just convenient rather than switching. |

Actually, no, mine was shipped with 7.0, and I haven't upgraded it yet, so I don't currently have the hotspot feature (though I do pay for tethering...so I'll have it once I install 7.1). I support about 250 BB users, and one of them inquired about it - he had upgraded to 7.1 on his 9850, and asked me if hotspot was free. He also has tethering on his line, so the hotspot feature/service is included for him. He reported that it seemed to work very well. And as for speed....I've tethered mine many times, and it's plenty fast for my needs on a 3G signal. We'll see how it goes when I find some time to upgrade mine & test the hotspot. Have a great day :) |
Re: personal hotspot feature on Bold 9900 ?
I have a 9900 with a beta 7.1 installed on it. Obviously you will need to have a carrier/data plan that supports the tethering/hotspot features, but it works well for my.
I have Rogers with a 6GB BIS data plan. |

Interestingly enough, I have an unrelated incident. When I first received my 9900 and did the SIM activation online, I could connect my 9900 via the data cable to a Mifi device (brand: Zalip). My ATT 4G speeds was 5Mbps down, 1Mbps up which I thought was plenty fast for a 9900 connected to a Mifi device via the USB cable. My admin had also told me prior that my BB plan was enabled for tethering and have data access. ("Modem Enabled" indicated on the BB's display as soon as I plugged in). A couple of days later, I started to commence the BES activation. Right after BES activation, whatever the BES profile settings were; downloaded and presumably disabled my ability to tether. My admin checked and said IPmodem was enabled on their BES administration console. However, I still cannot tether currently. Any ideas what to look out for? I can't seem to find the IPModem setting in Advanced System Settings on my device. Thanks! |
