blackberry email intercept and insertion

A friend sent an email from his Blackberry and someone hacked into it, inserted a few sentences, and it was delivered - altered - to the recipient with a copy (altered) back to his phone. It was a T-Mobile Blackberry account. Has anyone heard of this happening before? A computer security expert told me it is not that hard to do. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Thanks.

Impossible

Nothing left to say...

juwaack68 09-17-2007 07:54 PM

Not possible. The security of Blackberry email is the reason state, local, and federal governments use them.

Dubdub 09-17-2007 07:58 PM

No way.

I already know it is possible. I already know it happened. So your reply is not helpful regardless of what your FAQs say. I would like to hear what other users say.

juwaack68 09-17-2007 08:01 PM

Can you please tell us your proof of how it works. What 'security expert' told you this was possible?

Oh lord.... Please post the contact info or PM me the info of this so called *computer expert* as I'd like to have a conversation with this 1st year computer science drop out...

Not between the Blackberry and the email server. What the email server does with it is not a Blackberry problem.

I think someone accidentally typed something in an email they shouldn't have. This story won't fly.

That was my 1st thought....

Did you just fly over my house in a black hellicopter?????

It's very possible that someone hacked into your friend's personal email account (that is setup to communicate with his BB via his T-Mobile BIS account) and messed with this email.

But not after the email was sent from the Blackberry and before it was delivered to the recipient.

coastuser 09-17-2007 08:25 PM

Wow. That's pretty defensive.

This computer security expert that you so readily dismiss helped found two highly successful cell phone companies and retired with lots of extra change. As there is a personal safety issue involved here, I was hoping for an honest exchange of info and/or experience as I have been searching the web for two days and it's obvious from info readily available on the web that this is not only possible but happening.

But that's ok. I will continue my research elsewhere.

Thanks and sorry to have bothered you.

My guess is that someone either played a joke on him / her

or

As JC said someone sent something that they should not have then tried to cover tracks by making it look like they were jr. haz0r'd...

In order to hack an email from the sever they'd almost have to be monitoring it at the exact second it came in, modified it, sent it, then sent a different reply back....

Impossible in my opinion....

I'd say someone is either laughing their butt off at the joke or still trying to cover tracks from the email they wished they had not sent....

juwaack68 09-17-2007 08:27 PM

If what you say is true, then post your facts, not 'this security expert' with money to burn.

Lay it out there. Prove us wrong.

coastuser 09-17-2007 08:31 PM

"In order to hack an email from the sever they'd almost have to be monitoring it at the exact second it came in, modified it, sent it, then sent a different reply back...."

You're getting closer. Except for the last part. The reply back is automatic since it has already been altered.

But listen. I am not trying to convince anyone here. I am more concerned about my friend. The insertion was not inflammatory in the sense that noone outside of the sender and the receiver would read it and understand that it was a problem.

And you got an answer from 5 different people who all said it's not possible.... Since the *expert* has safety issues (read: rolleyes) he can send you an email detailing how this is possible and you can post his email here... That way his *safety* (read again: rolleyes) is not compromised...

Wow... who knew that RIM had hit squads on the payroll?

djm2 09-17-2007 08:40 PM

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/104)

I suggest that your security expert friend cash in with a high buck contract with Homeland Security. Tell him to line up at the trough!

coastuser 09-17-2007 08:41 PM

The security expert is not the one with the safety issues (you so easily mock) and he has nothing to gain or lose. He's just trying to help and figure out how it happened.

As for this comment: "Lay it out there. Prove us wrong."

I am not interested in proving you wrong. I only wanted to know if anyone else had ever experienced this. My focus is figuring out what happened and how. What I find astonishing is the level of denial happening in this forum. But that's for you to deal with not me.

I can tell one thing from reading this forum. You know a whole lot less than you think you do. Instead of trying to figure out IF this is possible, the focus is on telling me it is IMPOSSIBLE. But if it happened to you and it potentially put someone in jeopardy you cared about, you would not be so quick to go there. I hope this doesn't happen to any of you. But don't tell me it's impossible, because I know it isn't.

Good luck.

juwaack68 09-17-2007 08:43 PM

You have said nothing in your answers except that you 'know' it can happen.

So please enlighten us. HOW was it done?
