OS: 9300 6.0.0.1478/6.0.0.380 (English + East Asian)

Software For BlackBerry® Curvexxx8482; 3G smartphone (model: 9300) BlackBerry Handheld Software v6.0.0.1478 (Multilangauge)

Package Version: 6.0.0.1478
Consisting of:
  • Applications: 6.0.0.380
  • Software Platform: 6.6.0.86
  • File name: 9300jAsia_PBr6.0.0_rel1478_PL6.6.0.86_A6.0.0.380_S tarHub_Ltd.exe
  • File size: 148.79MB
Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

Download the OS file here (Be sure to choose the "BlackBerry® Curvexxx8482; 3G smartphone (model: 9300)":
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...9035BC566CE2B9

Instructions to install, regardless of carrier.

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." Vista/Win7 users: In the apploader folder, simply click on "Compatibility files" to see the actual Vendor.xml file. Once you've got that - simply delete the vendor.xml file there (even if you've deleted or think you've deleted it in the folder previously).
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a screen with an hourglass or status bar for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

Re: Latest OS: 9300 6.0.0.1478/6.0.0.380 (English + East Asian)

Well this is slick..
But I can't seem to decide if I it was worth upgrading or not. OS 6 used way more memory than 5 did. I went from 105 MB free to 58MB Free just by doing the upgrade. And Really the only thing I've noticed is that the home screen now acts like an iPhone and scrolls through different pages.

Also there appear to be no themes for OS 6. The default theme is lame and there is no way to configure it for "Today Plus"

So yes it's slick, but is it worth the nearly extra 50 Mb and losing almost half my free memory.... I don't know

Just my $0.02

Oh.. final note.. I do *love* the agenda view in the calendar. Never noticed that in OS 5 so I figured it's new to OS 6..

There are other themes available from third party developers, check the Themes section here.

Thanks JSanders..

However according to Motorcycle Mama "There are currently no themes that are compatible with OS version 6.0. RIM has not yet released that functionality."

Guess I'll have to wait a bit longer...

Oh as for the Agenda view.. yes they did have it on previous versions, however I guess I discovered it now because I do not like the layout for "day View"

Still reserving final judgement...

hmmmm... there are many themes available for the Torch and OS6. Perhaps they were not when MM said that, I don't know when she did.

Anyway, they are now. Check our own BlackBerryApps.com store here

Re: Latest OS: 9300 6.0.0.1478/6.0.0.380 (English + East Asian)

There are two items which I think worth mentioning here...

1. Internet browser - You now have multi tabs and the screen automatically zoom depends on how long you press the track pad. And the words will all fit into the screen without me scrolling to the left and right to read.

2. GPS - In the OS5, the GPS navigation is much easier to use in terms of looking for directions and finding a location. I find the one on the OS6 needs very detailed terms to locate a location. I think this would be okay once I gotten used to it. But one of my biggest gripes on this would be the locking of location once the navigation started. In the OS5, after you have gotten directions of a location, you just simply select Start Navigation and it will automatically starts the navigation and will lock your present location in the middle of the screen and when you Pan or Zoom, you simply hit the Escape button and you are back to your present location. With OS6, you need to Zoom and Pan to get to your present location or you can simply hit My Location and you are there, but with the Zoom all messed up. I am frequent GPS user and I find it strange that the present location can't be locked. I have browse through Crackberry and there was a solution, but it doesn't work for me. Maybe I am using it all wrong... Can somebody enlighten me. Previously I was using a Touch 3G with Garmin loaded, so I was pretty spoiled back then :D

This is my feedback on the OS6. Hope it helps!

nb. Yeah, and I am left with 50MB of free space too... LOL!

I suppose the OS5 themes would never work in OS6, any idea whether the Brisk theme is available for OS6? Really love the wallpaper friendly look of it

I've tried installing an OS5 theme and they do not even show up, even after a battery pull.
Oh well...

I should retract that... Those are not OS6 themes... And likely will not work.

Before I take the plunge, is this easily downgradable back to 5?

dstaff 01-05-2011 07:48 AM

Re: Latest OS: 9300 6.0.0.1478/6.0.0.380 (English + East Asian)

Yes you should be able to downgrade to OS 5 if you do not like OS6.
You can find the instructions on the blackberryFAQ page under "Applications and Operating System FAQ's"

But why would you want to? :-) I originally had the same plan.. I've been running OS 6 since Dec 22. And my original thought was "well this is slick, but is it worth the upgrade?"

Well now I have to say yes. This may be only anecdotal but I find OS 6 a bit faster than OS5. And even though my free memory was cut in half I have not had any issues with this. I've installed 20 apps and still have 51MB free. almost the same as a fresh install.

My biggest complaint is the lack of themes, but this is not a reason to downgrade. I'm sure the themes will come in time.

Does anyone know if this works on T-Mobile UK?
I don't want to download it and install it if it's going to mess anything up :?

Thanks
