8830 and GSM SOS

hi sorry i know bb8830 is old, but i recently bought it off ebay, unlocked and once from Sprint (US).

i have checked with mepd
ID 8965.........1001
Personalization:
SIM: Disabled
Network: Disabled
Network subset: Disabled
Service Provider: Disabled
Corporate: Disabled
(this means its unlocked rite?)

i m using SINGTEL carrier in Singapore and running on GSM 900/1800 frequencies, but my SIM card in my BB always show a red SOS instead of signal strength. when i choose "GSM", "MANUAL" under Manage connections/ Mobile Network Options, i can find 3 different service providers in Singapore but when i choose SINGTEL, it will become a SOS sign again.

Can someone please advise?

Perhaps the carrier does not support the GSM frequencies? Or it is not properly set up and activated by the carrier?
