So Someone Please Explain my misunderstanding of Wi-Fi...
Hi guys,
So here's the deal. I currently own a BB 8320, and a Nokia E65. Now, with the Nokia, I can connect using what I have called "Wi-Fi" to my home wireless connection, without a data plan, and from there connect to the internet and broswe my email and such. So basically, with the 'Wi-Fi', I have internet when I'm at home (like a computer/laptop does) Now with the BB there is also no data plan as of yet, just like the Nokia. However, when I try to connect to the home wireless network, I can't access the internet. Is there a difference between the 2? Maybe the Nokia is called something else? (Possibly WLAN after a bit of researching as I type this). If so what's the difference? Thanks! |
The 8310 doesn't have WiFi. The 8320 does.
That could explain some of it. |
Sorry it's an 8320. Def. has Wi-Fi as I've got the Wi-Fi options. Also, when connecting via Wi-Fi, the symbol is yellow, not green.

What type of security do you have on the home network?
|
WEP...double-checked to make sure it was the right code I put in too

What router? Not every router supports UMA.
|
UMA? Gah another thing to research on lol
Linksys WRT54G |
Should work fine.
I also do not have any experience with not having a BB Data Plan. There is a thread about what does and doesn't work with a Data Plan. |
so it looks like it should work even without a data plan...but for some reason the connection isn't working.
The Wi-fi connection says its only a yellow bar. And now my E65 won't connect saying that the WLAN can't be found even if it has it there. So i'm guessing it's the router and something with my connection. Gah.:x |
after checking again, it's def the blackberry. I fixed the settings on the Nokia (wrong WEP code) and it works perfectly. But still nothing working on the BB.
I connect to the router, but nothing after that. In the WiFi browser, it says "Unable to find the requested server" |
I believe the data still goes through the Blackberry servers, so without a data plan it will not work, regardless if you are on WiFi or Edge.

If you don't have a bb data plan, you probably have to go through the wap portal. If you set up your TCP option with wap.voicestream.com it might work.
|
What type of router do you have? I have a Netgear Rangemax. When set to "auto 108 mbps" the blackberry wouldn't connect. When set to "g only", it works fine. Try playing around with your router settings.
