using Wifi on 8120 withoout a data plan.
SO I just spoke to an AT&T rep and they told me that I could not use Wifi if I did not have a data plan. I told him that I thought Wifi was totally independent from AT&t but he said that it wasnt. Then he insisted I purchase a data plan. By the way I wanted to use my prepaid sim on the 8120, he said all I could do was send/recieve calls and txt messages! so can I use the Wifi connection I have at home or not? The rep says NO, and some of you say YES? Can I or not? Thanks in advance to all!!

Yes you can use your WiFi, you don't even have to have a SIM in to use WiFi.
Not having a data plan you can not use the BlackBerry features such as Push Email, BlackBerry Messenger, OTA Installs, and PIN messaging. |
Also check out:
http://www.blackberryforums.com/wifi...-can-t-do.html It is for the 8320, but is for the 8120 as well. |
Actually, you can do OTA installs using the wifi browser with no data plan. However, most apps you install OTA that require internet access to function usually won't work without a BB data plan.

I knew I was able to use Wifi! They just want more money! Thanks troybrown. Now what exactly are OTA installs and what do they do? Also thanks John Clark!

ALL you can do, though, is browse the web. You won't get email, pins, application internet access, etc.
OTA means Over-The-Air installation of 3rd party applications. Downloading .jar/.jad files from the internet. |
so browse the web, huh. What if I wanted to go to AT&t'S media mall and get a ringtone? The rep told me it was not possible because I neede to have internet and Wifi access. SO can I get them just by going to their website while im on Wifi? Thanks I know it must be frustrating teaching a newbie.

Hey does anyone know how I use Wifi for free? Because I know AT&T charge you like 3 cents per /kb I think. What do I need to do so they dont charge me, other than taking out my sim.
