Unlocked Blackberry Bold for AT&T
Hi all,
I was wondering a good place to buy an unlocked Blackberry Bold for AT&T with a good return policy. I currently have AT&T now and the Bold will not be our until Oct/Nov, I cannot wait that long. I am hesitant not to buy from a local AT&T store because if I have a problem I won't be able to bring it in or return it. Anyone know any reputable stores via the internet to buy a Bold and not got screwed if there is a problem. Thanks! |
None, really, yet.
Unless it is a TMo German released device, from Chile, etc. No North America carrier is selling them yet. You might find some on eBay or listed for sale, but they all seem to have a waiting period UNTIL they are released locally. |
or you could wait a week and get the rogers one

I know you're looking for a reputable retailer, which is critical, but it bears repeating that lots of the Bolds floating around are test units. RIM never intended them to be sold and they're now disabling the PINs, turning them into regular cell phones effectively. Some folks paid big $$ to get one and now find it's a cute paperweight. Waiting for a legit carrier release might be difficult, but it's the prudent thing.

And if you find a retailer, be expecting to pay between $ 650 - $ 800.

I don't think they will ship to the US |
That is correct, Rogers won't ship to the US. If you have friends or family in Canada they can pick one up for you. Also, a number of resellers are getting them in stock now.

Thanks to referrals from guys at crackberry I just Unlocked mine at Freeyourcellphone.com for 20 bucks(y)
It's working just great now, I've tested it on T-Mobile and on my Fido prepaid simcard PS. If anyone is in Toronto, I've seen a bunch selling for $499-$550 on craigslist:razz: |
I bought mine from Best Buy, Canada on Aug 24. I got it unlocked today from Adam - GSM PhoneSource.
Well I have to admit that Adam's services are far better and quick then anyone else in business. He sent me the unlock code within fifteen minutes. Thanks Adam. |
Wow, 15 minutes..and I thought I was quick lol.
|
Yeah I have to vouch for adam I have used him many times in the past... he is great...

I would recommend to all, keep an eye on the Buy/Sell/Trade section. Found myself a good deal on an unlocked Bold. |
My experience
OK, so here's what I did. I needed to buy two Bolds, both unlocked (family members always travelling). So I asked a friend in Toronto to buy the unlocked Bold for me and ship it to the U.S. Cost was C$650 plus S&H. I went to an AT&T authorized retailer in midtown and he set this one up for me yesterday. It works like a DREAM!!! Email, internet, phone, the works. Even though the Bold doesn't officially release in the U.S. until Oct 2nd, all the dealers have already been trained on the device and they know all the settings and configurations (which are apparently new for the Bold).
Now here's where I'm kicking myself. The dealers told me that if I had waited till Oct 2nd, I could have bought the Bold for $399 in NY with a $100 rebate PLUS they can unlock it for an additional $40. So your net price will be only $340 once you get the rebate back. Waaaah! So I overpaid for the first Bold but am definitely getting the second one through these guys. $340 and unlocked - how can you beat that? So I have two pieces of advice to anyone who cares. First, wait till Oct 2nd to buy the Bold. Second, buy it from an authorized dealer, NOT AT&T themselves. They will not agree to unlock it for you (why should they?) Lots of authorized dealers will unlock it for a fee if you've already bought the unit from them. I really wish I had known this before I got the Bold from Canada. I only talked to the AT&T guys earlier and so was under the impression that their phones could not be unlocked. Now I know better... |
