Need help -- fried my 7100 with 3.8.0.142 upgrade
 

Well, I did it. I got my 7100t yesterday and things were going great... and then I attempted an upgrade to 3.8.0.142 (download from T-Mobile). It went throught a number of steps; the step before last was reconnecting to the device. The BB sat there with an hourglass for 15 minutes, so I lost patience and took the battery out, then put it back in. The BB came back with a white screen with a little black icon in the middle, like a "No go sign" with a little window graphic in the middle and a number underneath "543". Like a firmware error message. That's it. Can't go any further. :cry:

The app loader can still connect to the device, and shows 3.8 system and core software installed. I was able to remove all other software (like the browser, etc.), but the system stuff is shown as installed with the latest version, and the app loader does not allow changing the action from "None" to update on these items. T-mobile tech support could not help.

Before I send the 7100 back to T-Mobile, does anyone know how I could force a reinstall of the system/core software? Perhaps try to bring it back to 3.8.0.112? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

uhh... try deleting the vendor.xml and device.xml I think...

Then delete the newer 7100 3.8 software and put the older one in loader files.

Start up desktop manager and it should ask you if you want to replace the newer OS with the older one currently used by desktop manager

Use javaloader to do a wipe -f or -a I think. then run app loader and do a clean install of everything. there is definitley no reason to mail this back.

Well, I don't have a copy of the older software, so I'll try this. how to I do what you described?

I am a bit concerned about doing a wipe, since I don't know what it does. There is also an OSloader, but I am not sure how to use it.

wipe will complete erase the device so you can load a new OS on it

Funny i just had to take my own suggestion... was upgrading a user to this and their usb port got all flaky in the middle so there was a partial load on the device which generated a JVM error and the device wouldn't boot. I wonder if there is a newer javaloader at RIM with more "features"...

Where can I download javaloader? I have fried my 7100t in the same way that the original poster did. Thanks!

Don't worry, this is my first BB too. Go to the blackberry site (www.blackberry.com), go to the developers' area, and download BlackBerry Java Development Environment.

Install it, then look for the file called javaloader.exe in the bin directory of wherever you install the SDK. then simplay run it from the command line (e.g. javaloader -usb wipe). Use the desktop software's app loader first to detect ther correct USB port, then run the command. That's it.

I've followed the directions above, but I can't figure out what to do with the javaloader.exe file. I've found the correct USB place, but how do I get the exe file to run?

Sorry for what may be a uninformed question, but I can't figure this out.

Run javaloader:

go to the command prompt. change folder to C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry JDE 3.7\bin> (or wherever you installed it).

Run javaloader:

javaloader.exe -usb wipe

Once this finishes running, install the BB OS package (if you haven't done so already), open the BB desktop manager, go to Application Loader, install the OS.

:x I am having a really hard time getting the javaloarder to work. I click on it in my bin folder and it flashes on my screen for a sec and disappears. What am i doing wrong? :cry:

You missed the earlier step that said "Open a command prompt" :)

Javaloader is a DOS program.

Open a DOS command prompt
change to the location of Javaloader. Then type

javaloader -usb wipe

with the BB connected and Desktop Manager shut down.

im sorry ... I am feeling really dumb right now. How do I open a command prompt? :oops:

Start / Run / cmd <- if you are running Windows 2000, NT or XP

Start / Run / command <- if you are running Windows 98

then use the "cd" command to change to the appropriate directory.

It's not dumb..
