Is my Blackberry Storm charging properly?

I have been given a Blackberry Storm handset and mains charger by a friend as he has received an upgrade. The handset had 25% of battery charge remaining when I got it, and after 'having a fiddle' for a while it ran completely flat and turned itself off.

When I plug the mains charger into the handset, a red LED (front face, top right) lights up for approx. 20 seconds, then goes off for approx 35 seconds before lighting up again for 20 seconds. This is continuing whilst the unit is charging.

After leaving it charging like this for around 30 minutes, I tried to turn the handset on - but nothing: the screen doesn't light up and pressing any of the four buttons along the bottom results in... nothing!

Is it 'normal' for the LED to 'flash' whilst charging or is this an indication that something isn't quite right? Should the red LED be on constantly?

Many thanks.

Nope note normal. Are you sure the adapter has the correct voltage/watts going in? It may be too low.

On the back of my OEM Storm Charger, it says:

INPUT: 100-240V ~ 150mA 50-60Hz
10-20VA

OUTPUT: 5V-700mA

What does yours say?

Scott

My charger says:

INPUT: 100-240V~50/60HzMax0.1A

OUTPUT: DC5.2V 580mA

Same Problem

I have basically the same situation as snags my charger says
input: 110-220V 50-60Hz
output: 5V-500mA
could this be why my storm is not turning on I put a brand new blackberry battery in it and mine does the same not normal flashing red light when i try to charge it

BlackBerry Storm 9500 - Technical Specification - Vodafone

"To recharge, or simply run your mobile phone on mains power, use its +5V DC/500 mA AC power adapter which comes with interchangeable, location-specific plugs."

trying a different charger

ok so i also got a car charger but it does not list the power rating and plugged it into that and now the red light is constant and it lit up white with a battery icon with a lightning bolt through it and it looks like its an indicator showing it has no charge. Am going to try to charge it up this way and see if its an issue with the charger having too low of voltage.

That is the "charging" indicator. You might want to be more particular about what you plug your device into. A $2 power adapter can ruin a $500 electronic device quicker than you can say "oh S&^%!"

Car charger didnt work either

When I first plugged it into the car charger it came up with the battery charging indicator but when I returned to it the screen was blank with no red indicator light. Is this a charger issue being that the one I have has a different power rating than the oem charger? Im gonna try to hunt down a different charger and see what happens.

i had the same problem. it ended up eating my battery after 3 months.

the guy at VZW said RIM knew about the issue. he replaced the battery under warranty and told me when the new OS gets released the issue will be fixed.

said its the RIM product issue log ITEM # RI167

hope this helps someone

the blackberry storm is a piece of SH%T!!

I regret the day I ever took my money out and spent it on this faulty sorry excuse for a phone.

This is the only phone I know that still gives battery low warnings whilst it charges? What?

The only phone where I have seen the battery die faster than the time it takes to charge it!

Doesn't let you make a call for atleast 10 minutes when the battery is completely dead? WTF is the mains charger for?

Only wants to turn back on the "radio" when you dial emergency services and cancel the call!!

There is nothing RIM or blackberry or whoever can say as this is my 3rd handset in 4 weeks because of manufacturers faults with the software and I'm currently waiting for vodafone to deliver my 4th as they will only do a like for like exchange so im screwed pretty much.

Then theres talk about them releasing a blackberry storm 2? Well how the hell do you get onto number 2 if you can't even get number 1 to work properly?

A joke. If your thinking about buying a blackberry storm. don't even the vodafone staff say its a load of rubbish.

Seems a bit like microsoft if you ask me.
