BEWARE ---- POSSIBLE SCAMMER!!!!!

Things are not adding up with this member ... we are 2 members so far, that bought phones but never received any tracking a this point in time. I would advise to not deal until proven otherwise..

Is this another one of your father's lost phones?

You have a LOT of complaints against you for a new seller. I strongly urge you to deliver against existing deals before starting new ones.

BUYERS BEWARE:
This "Lisa Lowe" is a very questionable seller. Do not do business with her (or him, should it choose to come clean with us here).

Re: BlackBerry Torch 9800 (Unlocked) Refurbish

An update on this. I sent this xxxx $150 as I got suckered into thinking it was some white punk chick from Cali and she was genuinely selling her phone. I didn't do much rooting around his facebook, I'd have realised it was some African scammer or something along them lines. I asked him if he had sent it, he said "Oops they need your full name and not an initial so I came back and will post tomorrow". I found that a bit strange that USPS would do that, as they send items to business names and not necessarily full names so an initial shouldn't matter. This was a delaying tactic, funds were in the process of being transfered to his bank. And then on Sunday he told me had posted it, so I was now scratching my heading wondering what post office is open on a Sunday? I wanted confirmation of shipping and he told me that he "forgot" to send by trackable means and that he would send me a print screen from the post office.

He produced a print screen, totally laughable and which was fraught with errors. This loser cannot even spell November and wrote delivered on the same day as he allegedly posted it.

I asked for his number in the USA to confirm he was a) a woman and b) in the USA. He declined citing his boyfriend being jealous. I requested to talk to the boyfriend instead then and was not allowed to do so. At this point I became highly suspicious and opened a paypal dispute right away. They were reasonably helpful. I managed to escalate this to a claim and got my funds back today.

Turns out this is some broke up black dude in a third world country someplace, hiding his IP number and running a scamming outfit. Clearly he sweet talks you with a delaying tactic (as was he was doing when he was replying right away to questions asked) so he can rapidly remove funds from his paypal accounts successfully, transfer them to his bank accounts and shut down the paypal account even before a dispute situation arises.

It was my quick thinking that saved another dude from being scammed too, I trust paypal has returned his funds to him? If anyone else has been affected by this b4stard, have you managed to get your funds back? My first purchase on this forum became a nightmare.

I would ask the mods to kindly demand that sellers produce a legitimate contact number in their origin countries where buyers can contact them to confirm they live where they say they do. This stops the third word rouges from preying on the newbies here who don't realise that there is a shady underground to the blackberry scene.

Re: BlackBerry Torch 9800 (Unlocked) Refurbish

^^ yeah, we should all post our exact addresses and social security numbers as well! [with numbers].

There's so much facepalm all around in this thread. Here's a wild idea 'if its too good to be true - it is!'

There was three potential transactions i wanted to take care of on here, one guy copied photos from google that someone else took [claimed as his own] so i asked him to take a pic with a piece of paper stating username - called him out, he never replied = scammer.

Jeez i've seen about 3-4 people get scammed on here since i joined this forum. Each time same story, a bunch of newbs that would probably fall for the craigslist scams too! LOL
/rant

Moral of the story, if someone is selling a torch, which is a 650$ device new, why would they be selling one for 1/3 of the retail price [refurbished or not] when they can get an easy 300-350$ within minutes of posting it? Think about it next time you want to buy a phone - or anything online for that matter.

Re: BlackBerry Torch 9800 (Unlocked) Refurbish

Thanks guys. As far as this forum is concerned, the upside of all this is that it did instigate our posting new Seller Guidelines which we'd been pondering for some time.

So, we're going to require posting personal phone numbers and certainly not SSN# on here, in the public forum. You can always request that or whatever you want as a part of the transaction.

Sorry about your failed transactions. As always, with any sale or transaction, "caveat emptor".

This forum has had hundreds of successful transactions, and there are as many trustworthy sellers who've come and gone through here. So, don't throw our the baby with the bathwater on these matters, and don't persecute the entire Buy Sell Trade section for several fraudsters.

Thanks.

Re: BlackBerry Torch 9800 (Unlocked) Refurbish

^^ here's a thought, have a mod deal with ONLY B/S/T section in terms of checking IP's of 'new users & cheap phones' ?? Many forums i'm on [not even cell phone related] have this system implied.

I mean, it wouldn't hurt assuming someone wants to do it... evidently there are still dense people that fall for this, maybe a little reassurance for their sake.

Re: BlackBerry Torch 9800 (Unlocked) Refurbish

Or shut it down as it causes as much harm as good.

mmagda 12-12-2010 06:16 PM

Re: BlackBerry Torch 9800 (Unlocked) Refurbish

Or... get with the program of many other successful forums that utilize this system with minimal 'harm' as you put it... and a mininal risk of being scammed.

*cough* crackberry *cough*

Re: BlackBerry Torch 9800 (Unlocked) Refurbish

What system? Have mods check every sale? No thanks. If that is how they do business then fine. Buy from eBay. I don't care.

mmagda 12-13-2010 12:25 PM

Re: BlackBerry Torch 9800 (Unlocked) Refurbish

^^ A simple system, someone would pm a mod in case of a sketchy sale, mod would take the 5 secs to check IP and that's it. case closed.

Second, make pictures a must with a tag of the username, so they can't be copied from google.

third have them state all details.

Last, don't be lazy, and do your job as a mod or recruit a few that will be willing to do so.
