Whats the appeal of BBM?

For someone who has unlimited data and texts, isn't BBM just the same as texting?!

Re: Whats the appeal of BBM?

BBM offers the following:

- Nearly instant delivery that's much faster than texting.
- Delivery status.
- Read status.
- Notification of a reply being typed.
- Sharing of pictures, voice notes, files, locations, and contact info.
- Ability to set the subject of a chat.
- Emoticons.
- Availability status.
- Group chats with multiple chat sessions, group picture posting, group list management, and group calendar support.
- No texting plan required.
- Can allow/block chat participants.

I'm sure there are plenty of other features/benefits, but that's the list off the top of my head.

No limit to the number of characters in a message is a big one....For the verbose in the audience, like me....

The above covered all the bases. For me, the delivery and read indicators are probably the most important to me.

For some other people in some localities, the relatively more secure nature of BBM is very important.

I would also add that you can BBM internationally at no additional cost. SMS usually has an international rate that you're charged regardless if you have an unlimited texting plan or not.

Don't know the truth. But I tend to doubt it. However, if RIM did release something, I'm sure it would be severely dumbed down compared to the features you read above for BBM on BlackBerry.

There is a post around here with a video from BBWC stating that the rumor was false. I'll see if I can find it.

Another plus for BBM is that you get BlackBerry encryption for your messages. Not a big deal for most folks, but it never hurts to have BlackBerry security in your corner.

Yep. RIM has stated that it won't happen because (1) it's an exclusive, key feature to the BlackBerry platform, and (2) opening the infrastructure to other platforms may introduce too many issues which will threaten the reliability of the service.

Just an FYI that the character limit in a BBM message is 2000 characters.

As more of my friends move to other platforms, the appeal of BBM is fading fast!

This is why i cannot use it. :( I can't even delete the app off my phone so that it's not always running in the background.

It's crazy how BBM is the top reason for most people to get a Blackberry now adays, i remember the days when Pin messages was cool, and Push email and security was the main reason for the device. am not hating on BBM though, the reason i like it, it saves me a lot from international calling..

Re: Whats the appeal of BBM?

I actually have more friends adopting BlackBerry and switching away from other devices. Android is taking a huge hit in my neighborhood as the older generation moves for the tried-and-true solution of BlackBerry. Mothers and even kids are getting BlackBerrys on family plans. Unified scheduling is a big reason, especially with all the different activities kids have these days. And having the scheduling in hand rather than in the cloud like with Google Calendar is critical. Coordinating two parents and two or three kids is a logistical nightmare. I know several families that get it all done with new BlackBerrys.

Something BlackBerry has had for a long time but Android still lacks is individual alert tones for different email contacts and SMS senders. Think of how useful individual ringtones for phoned calls can be, then multiply that by a factor of 10. For the way I work and use my BlackBerry these individual alert tones are mission-critical.

Yes you can. It's easily removed. I'll post instructions for editing the installer files, but try using BBSAK to remove it.
