Android Player for PlayBook leaked

Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
I downloaded it.
Summary; Looks like it still needs work. Once it opens (some have reported needing to reset PB a few times) you swipe down (Menu swipe) you get a little bar at the bottom that says "Set Home View" This then gives you options for Blank, Recent Tasks (Default), Installed Applications and Running Tasks. Selecting Installed Applications gives you an Android menu. From here, you literally are using Android. Settings, Messeging (though texting won't work obviously), Email (I successfully added my work Exchange account and now have native e-mail on the PlayBook!), Clock, Phone (wouldn't work obviously), Contacts, Camera (crashes, needed to force quit within Android), Calendar, Browser (works fine, a little slow), Gallery, Downloads, Dev Tools and Calculator. To go back from most places you use two fingers at the bottom bezel and swipe left (or right supposedly) Pretty xxxxing cool! |

I'm downloading now. Can't wait!

Downloading from where exactly?

Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
Clever...RIM lets us get a look at where they are and satisfies everyone's curiosity, while demonstrating just why they can't release it yet.
I'm not enthusiastic about the whole idea of Android-on-Playbook. If Android apps work so well on the PB, why would anybody write native PB apps? A similar thing happened to OS/2 back in the day.... OS/2 ran Windows apps, and native OS/2 apps vanished pretty quickly. Pretty soon, nobody wanted to run OS/2. I don't see why anybody will buy a Playbook if there's nothing but Android apps to run on it... |
Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
Got it installed, and as far on screen as the email config screen. I don't however, get the Android keyboard pop up when tapping a text field. Beta Bug? Or is there a way to get the keyboard to open? Or another secret to be able to type within the player?
...and the swipe-left has been working to "go back" Thanks! :) |
Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
Nevermind...keyboard came up in the browser...then it worked elsewhere. Gotta love leaked stuff!

Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
I got some basic functions. Anyone able to get the Android Marketplace?

Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
Sadly...we use Lotus Notes & there's no button for that one. Have Lotus Notes Traveler, can connect thru Android browser to download, but the installer file downloads to the Playbook. Not sure if I can side load that (yet).

Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
After reading this article yesterday, I am not too excited about running Android apps on the PlayBook.
More than 800 Android apps are leaking personal data - Yahoo! News Except I would like to have Angry Birds. |
Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
RIM issued a statement about the leak:

Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
Anyone able to download android apps and actually launch them? I tried going to market_android_com on the android browser on my PB, was able to select and download angry birds but I don't know where to launch it from (assuming it actually downloaded and installed)!!

Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
Put your playbook in dev mode (Options>Security>Development Mode)
Be warned you will have to set up a password. Download and install (Please install the appropriate version for your system) jre-6u25-windows-i586.exe jre-6u25-windows-x64.exe Then download and install DDPB Installer.msi (You will need this to install the .bar files) I did not connect via WiFi, so I will explain the cabled setup. Connect your Playbook to your computer. Open the DDLoader Enter the IP and password of your playbook. (If you do not know it, then click on the small person-like icon next to 'orientation lock') Click 'Add' then select your .bar file (sys.android.bar) and select all (You may also select 'Run After Finish' Select Install - You should see it complete in a short time. A popup window will appear with the word Done. If you choose Run after finish, then your app will start up after installation. ok. It may seem as if the app hangs (average wait time for app screen to change is 5 - 6 minutes (Don't worry)), then you will see Initializing. Then the Blackberry Logo will appear and start to shimmer, and another wait of 2 - 3 minutes. You will then see a black screeen with a small bar up top that reads 'Recent Tasks' Swipe down from the top bezel and small orange bar will appear in the bottom of your screen with the words 'Set Home View' select it. Choose Installed Applications (To go to the backwards in the player you have to swipe the bottom of the screen towards the left) Goto Settings>Applications and check Unknown Sources and then after the disclaimer choose OK. Now close the player and reopen, you should be good to go. |
Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
Installing the File Manager.
Make sure your Player is open on your Playbook. Download MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service and place it in the C:/platform-tools/ folder. Hit the start key and in the search box type cmd and hit enter. Type "cd C:\platform-tools\" Type "adb connect xxx.xxx.xx.xxx:5555" Replace xxx with your ip Screen will read: "connected to xxx.xxx.xx.xxx:5555" Type "adb root" Screen will read "restarting adbd as root" Type "adb connect xxx.xxx.xx.xxx:5555" Replace with your ip Screen will read: "connected to xxx.xxx.xx.xxx:5555" Type "adb install Astro.v2.3.1.noexpire.apk" Screen will eventually read: "Success" Now you can install all your apps (Well Android ones anyways...) via the File Manager. On the recent tasks screen swipe down from the top bezel. Choose Set Home View and choose Installed Applications, and down at the bottom should be Astro. Click and accept the agreement. After you open Astro... Select the Download folder(all the apps you want to install must be in that folder on the PB) Select the App you want to install. Select the Open App Manager option and select Install and then Install once more. Repeat as needed. |

Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
I like Winamp
http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/...G_00000069.jpg Dolphin Browser 6.0 for Android 2.3 http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/...G_00000070.jpg I still like the native PB browser. About to install my first app using Astro File Manager http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/...G_00000072.jpg Make sure this is enabled before you install, or it will not work. [Settings>Application] http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/...G_00000068.jpg It's as simple as choosing a file with the android icon and installing. http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/...G_00000073.jpg |

ZombieBerry
You got a RDP client working? Trillian, SSH and RDP are must have apps for me on the Playbook - just need the RDP now. |
Re: Android Player for PlayBook leaked
I can confirm RDP, Citrix (Apps, not desktop) are working.
SSH (Shown as Connect Bot in the picture in the above post) also works. Trillian works except for my various Twitter feeds. Though, I think my version is the one where it is not included. You have to be careful, while there are many reports of what works and what does not, you have to make sure you are installing the same version as the others, or a different one (If they are having trouble with the newest one For example AndTorrent, the newest version does not work, but install an older build, and it works like a charm) |
