I know a few devs that are doing this even though they doubt it will only make 10k.

It is a good insurance for devs making apps

It isn't just the $10k. Quallified applicatins will have met, and must continue to meet, RIM's requirements for user experience, quality, stability, etc. Having the badge on your application is going to be very valuable marketing as long as RIM maintains high standards.
