New Gmail App and BB Application Loader!
Is there any way to load the new Gmail App onto my Blackberry 8703e through the Application loader? I don't have BES or BIS, I'm using Sprint's Vision and OperaMini to access the internet, and as far as I know, OperaMini doesn't have download capabilities because I get a message saying that it's trying to "invoke the Blackberry browser" everytime I click on the .jad file to download :( Since I don't have BES or BES access, I don't have a functioning BB browser :( Any suggestions?
Please help me, this is all I need to fill my blackberry needs, I love this thing! Haha :) -August P.S. This is my first BB and I must say it's absolutely the best device I've had the pleasure of using. (I'm coming from a PPC6700 and a Treo 700p.) |

I you dont have a BlackBerry data plan you will not have a BlackBerry browser. And I dont think that the gmail app is available to load via application loader, OTA install only.

Of course, without a data plan the Gmail app isn't going to work anyway.
Solution: Get data plan, load Gmail app OTA, use Gmail app. |
how did you get vision to work w/out the BB plan??
i called and added Power Vision from tele-support but still is telling me my browser isn't configured |
Why one might need to do a non-OTA install of gmail app
I originally composed this with nice links to everything, but apparently that's a no-go. So, wish I could be more helpful but...
My situation might help clarify: I live in Beijing and there is no way to get personal BB data service (yes, roaming works if you have a plan elsewhere and you can get a corporate BES setup thats quite spendy, but that's it). So I use a 7290 with a vanilla GPRS-enabled sim. It has lowercase "gprs" access, but no default browser appears because there are no service book entries, etc. So, I use Opera Mmini on the cmnet wap connection and it's great. But I can't install the gmail app through Opera because it wants to use my BB browser to do the actual download (Opera doesn't reveal device type, I gather). When the browser comes up, it says the predictable: no service book entries, etc. I've tried a number of different methods to get it installed including one found on this forum: 762-howto-manually-convert-jad-jar-cod-if-you-cant-do-ota. But I keep getting errors after install. I suspect it is because I am using the Geneneric file from gmail.com: .../app/v1.0.0/en/gm-Generic-Advanced_MIDP2.jad Instead of the one made for my device. But I can't for the life of me find a directory listing for .../app/v.1.0.0/en/ or the filename of the actual .JAD that I need. I've tried changing my browser User Agent to mimic my device, with no luck. Simulator is up next. Basically: .../app/v1.0.0/en/I_need_This_For_7290.jad So, If anyone can do the OTA install on their 7290 and tell me what the file name is that it prompts you to download, I'd be grateful. Or if you can figure out how to see the directory contents... Of course, I don't even know if this will work given the browser/data plan situation, but the SHAPE services GMail Mobile app does work fine. It's an OK program but it looks like the official gmail app is better, and I don't feel like paying 20 bucks when there is a free solution. Cheers. Drew |
Most of the time I can do the jar to cod conversion and use javaloader to load the app. But I am having the same problem with the gmail jar app. It converts to a cod file and it loads, but i get a java exception error when I try to run it. My question, what is OTA doing differently compared to doing the jar to cod conversion on the computer, and has anyone been able to come up with a gmail.cod file that can be loaded with javaloader or the desktop application loader?

I'm interested in finding a solution to this as well. I'm going to implement a software policy here in about two weeks and there will be a lot of people peeved that GMail will cease to function since I can't add it to the white list.
This is odd because for GMaps, Google at least made the COD's downloadable... |

Thanks for the link.
I manged to get this link by using the simulator. But it was still a no-go on conversion: java exception error. Same effect whether I used javaloader or created an .alx. So I just quite and shelled out the 20 bucks for the commercial app. I just ran out of patience and was spending way to much time messing with it. However, if someone finds an elegant solution, I'd love to give it a go. |
Cod Files For Gmail Are Here!!!
Here we go again! I found the .cod files for GMail for all models of BlackBerry!!
http://www.gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gm_8700_v4_0_en.cod http://www.gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/g..._v4_0_en-1.cod Change 8700 to 7230, 7250, 7290, 8700, 8100, or 7100 to download the appropriate .cod files. I'm also inserting an example .alx file for the 8700. Modify to your taste and HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Quote:
