same problem
I am having the same problem as described above. It happens on my AT&T 8820 with 4.5 software, and also on a 8830 on Verizon with 4.5 software.
It is annoying.... because this KB article from...

same deal with me
it stopped functioning properly after a long day in my (tight) jeans!
I tried to bend the BB "outward" and this seemed to help a little bit.
I bought a new trackball while troubleshooting this...
