do you have to push the tape button? then call...

do you have to push the tape button? then call someone for it to go through the car speakers or what it doesnt ever seem to work when i try ughhhhhhhhhh

is this possible? a friend of mine did it once with his sidekick. like speaker phone through the car. i forgot to ask him how he did it so someone tell me if its a setting on the phone or whatever...
