Also, I am able to send gif in BBMessenger(4.5), but unable to receive/open gif's on a 4.2 OS. The 4.2 curve has no SD card, if that matters.

I didn't lose any preinstalled apps either, but I did have compatibility issues. Look for the 3rd party apps backup thread and at least have a backup for the worst case scenario.
