had this same problem using my old Huron. somehow i solved it using this method (pls note it may not work for Bold)

i took the battery out of the unit (turn it off first), then i connect the unit...

try this..

try connecting your BB without the battery to your PC USB for some moments.
i tried 10 mins and it work..
