May have figured it out, sorta. I am using a 4GB Kingston microSD-- friend gave me their different brand microSD to try-- it brings up Mass Media mode every time without problems! Mine, despite the fact it works under the above special conditions, and always when plugged directly into the PC, appears to have some strange compatibility problem with the BB causing this behavior.
