No, they - and you - didn't misunderstand, JW68 is the one who misunderstands. Its a technical FACT that you cannot have simultaneous voice and data with EDGE. Email uses data, so there is NO way to receive email while on a call. SMS texts use the regular voice network though, so it IS possible to receive (and send) SMS while on a voice call.
