Best advice for Japan is get a Japanese phone - one that is made for the Japanese network which you use. Non-Japanese devices do not have a good track record of giving acceptable service. They use different frequencies from the rest of the world.
You might try a search and see which models have been identified as working.
However, if you live there, buy the Japanese device. Less headaches and it should work as advertised.
