I bought a Motorola headset from Costco which came with a car charger that just happened to work with my Torch. I haven't had any problems either.
I think what your describing is
exactly what dbltap is describing. Old Nokia phones used to tell you when you plugged them in that they weren't charging.
Get a two for one and buy a headset and use the traveler charger like I do
