I have yet to see it go to 3G, even though most areas I'm in are not yet AT&T's version of 4G. I've seen it go to EDGE, though. I think AT&T has their software and/or towers programmed to just show 4G, no matter if it's 4G or 3G. IMHO, it should only show 4G if it's connected to a 4G/H+ tower with enhanced backhaul.
