FYI..

I came accross the same situation and here is what I did to fix it.

1. The pc would not recognize the bb, so I uninstalled the desktop software.

2. Reinstalled the desktop software and firmware, both 4.0

3. Reconnect the bb.

4. Opened the Desktop Manager, opened Application Loader and followed the prompts.

I choose to load all of the apps (by default they were all unchecked).

The downside was that I lost all of the information on the BlackBerry, but I was able to get the device up and running in less than an hour.
