BES Upgrade from 2.2 to V4 - issues

Dear All,
This is my first post so forgive me if its in the wrong area!
I am planning the upgrade of our BES (for Domino) from 2.2 to v4.
We do not give users a desktop manager and are setup by our helpdesk and distributed to all users.
I have heard conflicting stories about the upgrade process.
Vodafone technical support have told me that after the BES upgrade all handheld devices will continue to work as normal but will not benefit from the V4 fetaures until they are returned to our helpdesk to be cradled and upgraded to v4 of the handheld software.
I have also been told that after the upgrade the handheld devices will start to have problems (i.e. they may recieve mail but not be able to send for example) until they have been cradled and upgraded to 4.
Can anyone clarify this situation?
