Trust me...
I had the same problem and I followed all the sage advice about, do this and do that and it was, alas, in vain. But one night when trying to upload some MP3's, my Sony Adtrac software didn't detect my player and the light went on.
I used my old USB cable for my camera and badda-bing, badda-boom.
Mouse-Shmouse, change that USB cable
