well if you read both articles, the 9to5 says that they did not find anyone's actual imei being sent, they just saw the line imei as part of an address.
the gizmodo says that it sends a generic number as part of what it sends. It uses the same number for all the phones, no specific to anyone at all.
So I think it looks like 9to5 did not follow up on what they found and then in the gizmodo article they did the work to actually see what is sent.
