Default Anybody get GPS to work in China?

Please Login to Remove!

Truth is, when I switched to a Bold from my 8800, I flicked on the BB Maps app, saw that it was "Searching for satellites" and never got locked on. I figured it was China Mobile or some other force of the Great (Fire)Wall that was at work, so I kinda forgot about it.

On vacation in England, BB Maps to work (roaming on O2 or Vodafone) without any problems.

So I'm back now in Shanghai, wanting to pick up the ball again.

Does anybody know what to do to get my GPS working here? Do I need another app (not BB Maps)?, I really don't need mapping (not been able to find English language Shanghai maps for my Garmin -- which also doesn't work here). Just logging my GPS coordinates, tracking distance and a compass is fine.

Anyone, anyone?

(BB: Bold with OS: 4.6.0.190)

See the "All Known GPS Apps" thread.

Also, try ruling out the GPS app. Refresh your GPS receiver via Options->Advanced Options->GPS.

I've since loaded GPS Logger, and will try a different app.

I've refreshed the GPS receiver before under this Options menu. I still don't get any sats. The GPS operates independently of the carrier, right? So I SHOULD get a satellite lock and coordinates? I know downloaded maps will be a different thing...

I'll try again when I get a clear outdoor line of sight with the sky. In Shanghai, that's hard.

You're right, it doesn't make any sense. I've certainly had a strong satellite lock in Shanghai, a few years back with an old Emtac puck using the Sirf 2 chipset. Haven't been to Shanghai with my 8110 -- no closer in fact than Hong Kong, although my Pearl's GPS worked perfectly there (maybe that was due to my proximity to the Pearl River, arr arr).

Can only suggest you persevere because I don't see how the carrier can block it without you downloading some sort of 'update'.

Got it going. Needed to do a battery pull first, then the Options > Advanced Options > GPS > Refresh. Thanks.
