Well I just setup my blackberry curve, which Rogers posts on their website "Built-in GPS". Which, of course, means that the ability to use GPS is built in. However, if you want to use the feature, it's another 10$ a month.

Quite frankly I couldn't care, but it's the principle of it all. Nowhere on their site do they say that GPS is an extra feature.

So you can't even use Google Maps without buying paying $10/mo?

You can. You just can't use the GPS functionality of it.

I'm confused: I know you stated "setup my blackberry curve" but your profile and signature read 8700 and 8130, respectively.

Do you actually have the 8310? If so, gps "should" be available without an extra fee. Go to Options > Advanced > GPS, and see if you can refresh your location there.

Yes, the GPS functionality is there. I am on Rogers with an 8310 and the GPS works perfectly with blackberry maps and google maps.

Just give it a second. It doesn't connect immediately. The $10/mo is for NavSat or whatever it is called. The turn by turn directional software.

There are other options like Mapquest Navigator which is free. It's all up to personal preference. I've been using the mapquest software and am going to try telenav today to see if I like that better since it has traffic updates every 5 minutes.

I have to pay $10/mo to use Sprint Navigation...it's not a Rogers thing.

I thought I would be cussing at AT&T, who told me that the GPS would work with free services such as Google Maps, as I was not having much luck. I couldn't get the GPS to find my coordinates, even. Finally, I did a battery pull restart, went outside in the middle of the road (don't do this if you live on a busy street ) chose Refresh GPS in the Options - Advanced Options - GPS menu, held the unit up over my head as high as I could with it angled so I could read it. About 30-45 seconds in, voila, there were my coordinates. I started Google Maps, and was able to 'find myself' via GPS.

Great tip.

Plus the first initialization for a GPS takes longer than subsequent times. usually because a GPS doesn't reallt know where you are until it does establish satellite lock, then it has to download almanac tables on satellite positions for future ref.

I had tried everything but the battery pull and holding it up in the open street (I was outside initially, but close to my house and some trees) several times, waiting until the GPS would just tell me '0 satellites found.' I don't know if one or both were the fix, and after a day of fussing with it, I don't care if it was the '4-lettered-word magical invocation' I cast over it, as long as it works now.

I also thought the permissions under Google Maps didn't look right (Allow under Connections - GPS was highlighted in bold, no others were) even though it had prompted me to 'Save' after I made the changes when I installed Google Maps. However, that should not have made a difference with Refresh GPS, I wouldn't think.

That battery pull/restart has been the end fix for a lot of head scratchers with my Curve and my wife's Pearl.

And I'm hoping that you also set the GPS to Location and not 911 only.

I don't see any such option in my GPS menus. It just has GPS Source: Device, then Location: (last known coordinates, number of satellites, etc.)

p.s., I dig the paisley Tele.
