Selecting contact on compose SMS dials number

Okay, I had this happen the other night and it just sorta went away, but now it has come back. I set one of my side switches to "Compose SMS" and when I press it, obviously it prompts me to select a contact. Well it seems for some reason or another, when I select most of the contacts, it dials their number instead of adding them to a new message as a recipient.
Some contacts it works properly, but most of them it doesn't. However, if I go into my SMS inbox and then choose to compose a message from the menu, it works fine. Any ideas why it's acting so weird when I use the side switch?
I'm also finding that certain contacts that I've emailed from my BB causes it to automatically think I want to send an email to them when I'm trying to send an SMS. I have other contacts with emails entered in but it puts their mobile number in when I do an SMS. Shouldn't it stick to composing an SMS when I ask it to, and not switch to email?
