I have a 8700r but I want to us it in Usa. Cingular says that It won't work with the data plan How can I change the os to be a 8700c

OS is the same you do not need to change your OS it will work fine. if you are going to roam(still use rogers in USA) then you are good to go.

if you want to use the device on cingular network you have to unlock it, if it already isn't.

you can check by going

options>advanced>sim

type MEPD

if network read active then the phone is locked to rogers and you have to unlock it. it is generally anywhere from 35 to 80 dollars to unlock an 8700.

Its a completely same device, just cosmetics, dont even tell them its an 8700r.

Cingular is, as usual, wrong (though call back enough times and you might get someone who is properly trained). You will need to unlock it if you intend to use it with Cingular but that's it. It will work fine. No OS change needed. My 8700c's on Cingular run the T-Mobile OS and the Bharti (an Indian carrier) OS.
