How do I get that cool lightning picture back instead of the stupid verizon logo. Without setting everything back to default?

Go to Media>Pictures and highlight (but don't click on) any picture you have. Hit the menu button. The sub menu should have an item that says "Reset Home Screen Image". Click on that, and whatever the default screen image was will populate.

yeah, somehow verizon has figured out how to overlay their logo over the original image, because i notice that when executing an operation, when the display is redrawn, i see evidence of the lightening bolt image...it is there, I just can't figure out how to delete the verizon image
